Chapter 302

Grayson’s POV

When I woke up again, I was in a metal cage. It wasn’t long or wide enough for me to fully stretch out my body, or tall enough for me to stand up. In wolf form perhaps, I would have been more comfortable, but with this collar dampening my ability, I couldn’t summon my wolf, not even just to shift.

I could hear him still, in the back of my mind, growling in displeasure, but his power was far out of reach.

I tried to be subtle as I woke, not immediately giving myself away as being awake. I could hear talking in the room.

“This is a gift for you, Bear King,” said Chuck. The other bear shifters who had aided in my capture stood at his side, but slightly behind him, in a line before their king.

All bear shifters were large, but the Bear King was somehow even more giant. Just looking at him, I could tell he was the most powerful of all bear shifters. I’d be able to tell even if I couldn’t sense his aura, which I could.

This man was dangerous.

“Is this truly a gift for me?” the Bear King said. His voice was deep, and though he was calm, his words still somehow boomed throughout the war tent. The calmness was an illusion, I could tell. With how tense he was, it was clear to me that he was holding onto his patience by a mere thread. At any moment that thread was going to

snap.

Chuck and the others did not seem as aware of this. “Yes, Bear King. We went to the kingdom and took him.”

It hadn’t been that simple, but I wasn’t going to be the one to point that out.

“You went there without order or direction,” the Bear King said. “You told no one of your plans.”

Chuck, for the first time, finally seemed to notice the danger he was in. His voice started to shake. “N-no, Sir… We wanted it to be a surprise.”

“We are standing at the dawn of war,” the Bear King said. “And you decide to mess around behind my back? How did you even get this prince? You expect me to believe that you buffoons were able to sneak into the palace and steal him?”

Chuck and the others nervously looked at each other.

“We made some deals,” Chuck said. “But we never believed that you would honor them…”

“You made deals in my name. You dared to pretend that you had that authority?”

“It wasn’t -”

“Enough,” the Bear King bellowed, and the air seemed to suck straight out of the room. Then, without more warning than he’d already given, he walked up to Chuck and punched him. With a horrifying crack, Chuck’s body flew straight out of the tent, moved by the sheer force of the punch.

The others cowered at once.

“Get out of this tent, gather what’s left of your friend, and be gone. I never want to see your miserable faces again,” the Bear King demanded.

One of the others, slightly braver, or perhaps more foolish, than the rest, mumbled, “B-but a… reward?”

One sharp look from the Bear King was enough to have the man ducking down, covering his head.

“F-forgive me!”

The Bear King took a threatening step closer. “The only reward I will give you is by not snapping your neck. Now get out of my sight.”

They didn’t wait around after that. The group pushed each other on their way out the door, stumbling over each other in a careless chaotic way.

When they were gone, the Bear King growled lightly. “Idiots.” A pause. “Don’t you think so, wolf prince?”

He slowly turned to face me, and I gave up the ruse of being asleep, pushing myself up to sit upright as much as I could. Refusing to kneel in front of the Bear King, which I realized now was likely his intent with a cage this size, I sat down and watched him.

“Stay silent, I don’t care,” the Bear King said. “You’ll be executed in the morning.”

My surprise must have shown on my face. Maybe he hadn’t asked for me to be brought here, but now that I was, expected him to want to try to interrogate me for answers – potential werewolf weak points or army intel, at the very least.
