Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 303

Chapter 303

Lilian’s POV

She smiled widely, and I did too, as a surge of joy shot through me at seeing her again. It was short-lived, with the fear of what could be happening to Grayson weighing down on me. But for a brief moment, reunited with my friend, I felt a small mornent of peace.

We hugged at once, holding tightly onto each other.

“I heard you were shipped away to be married,” I said. “Ivory said you didn’t even answer her letters.”

“Because I never received them,” Clara replied. “It’s such a long story.”

As we parted, I glanced from her to the man who was with her, who was gazing at her with soft eyes. Slowly, I remembered what Reginald had said, that she and her mate were likely our contact, to help me sneak across the border. I glanced at her mate more critically.

He didn’t look like any werewolf I had ever seen, didn’t scent like one either. And he certainly didn’t seem like someone her parents would have approved of, especially if she was running around the border dressed as she was.

“Lily,” Clara said, stepping back, closer to the man. “This is my mate, John.” She paused a moment, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth, like she was nervous. “He’s a bear shifter.”

I think, in a way, I could tell that was the truth even before she had told me, but I hadn’t allowed myself to believe it, not thinking that someone like Clara could be tied in with the enemy. But if she was here, if she was willing to help…

“Clara…” I said, feeling some hesitation. Only Reginald’s presence there, totally unraveled despite the revelation, helped keep me calm. That, and my trust for Clara.

“They aren’t all bad,” Clara said.

I gave her a skeptical look. “How did you meet?”

“My parents knew about the dangers that were rising in the capital, so they called for me to return home. Our lands were up in the north, along the border with some of the more peaceful bear clans. I met John by chance, while I was running through the forest. I thought he was just a bear at first.”

“And I thought she was just a wolf,” John added. His voice was deep but gentle. “We still got along.”

“Then, I saw him shift,” Clara said, blushing. “It was love at first sight.”

Clara and John looked at each other and a moment of soft warmth passed between them. Just seeing it, I felt like I was intruding on something.

“My parents didn’t approve, of course,” Clara said. “They tried to marry me off to some wolf, moving things so quickly so that I wouldn’t have a choice. But I ran away. John and I eloped. I haven’t looked back and I don’t regret it for even one minute.”

I looked at him again, wondering if he cast some kind of love spell on her. Was that something Bears had the power to do? I wasn’t sure. Magic existed but was so unknown and mysterious, no one really understood the origin.

“He’s one of the good ones,” Clara assured me.

“There’s a rogue sect among the bears,” Reginald said. “Those that don’t approve of their King’s ambitions.”

“We call ourselves the Bears for Freedom,” John said, “But rogues works for our purposes. We are against the King’s orders. Many of our order have been trying to stop this war from inside. We have secret members within the warriors at the camp here. Clara and I have joined their effort.”

“You aren’t a bear,” I said to Clara. “Surely they don’t trust you?”

“Trust? No,” Clara said. “But most who know I am truly a wolf believe me to be a trophy of war. They don’t understand the truth, or care really. Though mostly, we try to cover my scent and keep the truth entirely hidden.”

“I never leave her side,” John said. “I will keep her safe.”

When he said that, so determinedly, I believed him.

“As you are Clara’s friend, I will do my best to ensure your safety as well,” John added.
