Chapter 307

Lillian’s POV
The shifted bears looked at the one still in his human form. The man took a breath, and then replied, “They are, but it’s nothing like home up north.”
I exhaled the breath I had been holding.
“Get across the border line as quickly as you can,” the bear said. “The next patrol will not be so kind.”
“I understand,” I said. “Thank you.”
The man nodded, and then together with the other bears, they hurried away.
When they were a safe distance from us, Grayson turned to look at me, an expression of awe and wonder on his
face.
“How did you do that?” he asked.
“I’ll explain on the way,” I said. “We should get to our side of the border.”
He nodded, then scented the air. “This way,” he said. Before he turned, he held his hand out for me. I took it. I accepted it, and we hurried together toward the border, with Grayson occasionally stopping to listen and scent.
As we neared the border, he said, “Now. How did you do that?”
So, I explained. About chasing after him, the flat tire, meeting Reginald, then connecting with Clara and John. I told him about the bears who opposed the war, who had infiltrated within the warriors, hoping to find a way to stop things. They didn’t want to follow their mad king’s ambitions.
Grayson listened, nodding lightly throughout. “I’m pleased to have any assistance where I can get it,” he said. ” You saw their number. They are strong and many. Our side is hungry and tired. They can hardly afford to feed their families, they don’t want to fight a war.” He lowered his head. “I must find a way to end this war as quickly as possible, with as few casualties as possible.”
I had no idea how he intended to do that, but I trusted him. If anyone could find a way to end this war before it began, it was Grayson. Especially if he teamed up with Reginald.
“When we teleported,” Grayson said, and I realized I had left some of my story out. I backtracked now, filling him in about Teacher’s voice in the necklace and the blacksmith’s hammer. I even showed him now, how the necklace was dormant. He hadn’t been able to feel the magic that had been inside before, but still he looked and nodded, trusting me as I trusted him.
“Did Lone Archer escape?” Grayson asked.
“I don’t know,” I said, admittedly worried. The other alternative was that he used so much of his magic and power that he was now too weak to communicate from the necklace prison. For this reason, I continued to carry the necklace, keeping it safe in my pocket. Until we knew for sure if he was free, I would treat it gently.
At some point, when we were free from the current threats, I wanted to have the necklace examined to reveal its secrets. How could magic like this even exist in the modern world? I had so many questions, and no way to get the answers. At least, not right now.
Grayson squeezed my hand.
Eventually, we must have crossed the border because a wolf patrol found us and we were brought back to the

camp. We were taken straight to the war tent. Lead through the camp, many wolf warriors stood and looked at us.
A few even cheered.
“Prince Grayson! You’re alive! You escaped!”
