Chapter 308

Lillian’s POV

“Teacher!” I called for him, worry filling me. Gods, I prayed he wasn’t dead. After living such a long life, I couldn’t imagine that he might have given it all up like this. That didn’t seem like him, he always had a plan. A man who had been alive as long as Teacher always had to have an escape route, didn’t he?

But still, I worried.

Yet even as I called out for him, I knew it would be fruitless. He wasn’t here. I was alone and certain of it.

Whether that meant that Teacher had escaped or had died, I just didn’t know.

When I blinked my eyes open, awake again, the sun was low in the sky again. It must have raised and passed overhead while I slept the day away. Grayson was gone, but the clothes that had been left were neatly folded/ Perhaps he had gone to shower.

Lightly scenting myself, I immediately frowned in distaste. I smelled like bear and sweat. Grabbing my clothes, I sought out the shower, thinking I would find Grayson on my return. I took my time in the makeshift shower stall, rinsing the grim from my hair. When I was clean and dry again, I pulled on the simple shirt and pants I had been left, pulled on my boots, and went back to the tent.

Grayson still wasn’t in the tent, though this wasn’t terribly surprising. He wasn’t the type to wait around if there was work to be done. Neither was I.

So instead of waiting, I walked toward the war tent, not at all surprised to find Grayson standing just outside of it. He had just opened the tent flap and come out, stopping when he had seen me.

He waited for me to approach. When I was close enough, he immediately leaned down and kissed me.

“What is this?” I asked, noting his good mood. Now that I was onto it, I also noticed the good mood that seemed to reverberate throughout the camp. Something was in the air, and it felt like hope.

“What’s going on?” I asked Grayson.

He kissed me again. “See for yourself,” he said, then held back the flap of the tent.

Inside, speaking with Reginald near the war map, was Teacher.

I gasped so loud it drew the attention of everyone in the room.

Reggie smiled at me.

Teacher looked at me kindly. I stared at him in disbelief, and relief.

“Let’s take a little break so the Teacher can have his reunion with his student,” Reggie said and ushered most people from the tent, or at least to the other side of it.

Teacher came over to me and Grayson. Grayson backed up a few steps, giving us room.

I hugged Teacher at once. “I’m so glad you are okay. When you weren’t in the dreams anymore -”

“I’m sorry to have worried you,” he said, gently holding me back. When he let go, I did too, and we both backed up to look at each other.

“I don’t understand how any of this is possible,” I said. I still had the necklace in my pocket, having moved it from my soiled clothes to these new ones. I pulled the necklace out now and held it aloft for him to inspect. He

frowned down at it.

Those necklaces were forged with magical steel,” Teacher said. “They had been passed down through the generations, their true purpose lost to most who have possessed them.”

“My mother had one,” I said.

“Yes,” Teacher replied but did not clarify. “She thought it an honor of her family line. I could not change her mind on the matter. In truth, they have always been meant as prisons.” He hung his head a moment. “I had grown careless in the modern age, thinking that the truth of magic was gone. I had not considered that my enemies my route out any means of constraining me, and finding the one way that almost works.”`
