Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 311

Chapter 311

Grayson’s POV

The Bear King, it seemed, couldn’t do anything with any kind of subtlety. Even as he stepped onto the battlefield, he did so with an entourage, wearing a suit covered in gold. His bears cheered for him, chanting in rhythm. As he came closer, his entourage removed the gaudy gold piece by piece until he was in more practical combat wear.

He was alone when he finally met me in the center of the field, our own armies behind us, watching

“In my cage, the collar dampened your strength,” he said. “I can tell now that you are powerful. But that power is but a drop in the bucket of my own strength.” He smirked. “I feel as if I should thank you for volunteering to give up your kingdom so willingly.”

“I have warned you that you underestimate us,” I said. “And I told you your pride will be your undoing. You did not listen then, but I ask you to listen now. Give up this foolish dream of conquest and go back to your homeland We will not follow.”

He laughed, and even though his bear army couldn’t have possibly heard what I had said, seeing their leader laugh made them laugh too. An echoing mockery.

My pride was undamaged, my conscious clear. I had attempted a peaceful solution, and he had denied it. Now there was nothing left to do but fight.

“Prepare yourself, wolf,” the Bear King called. He gestured toward himself. “I’ll even let you take the first hit.”

“I don’t need that,” I said.

“Take this moment of generosity, boy. This is the only mercy you will get.” His gaze darted along the line of wolf soldiers, stopping at Lily. “Is that your mate? A cute thing. When I kill you, I will have you.”

A growl escaped my throat.

He grinned, all teeth. “I said we wouldn’t kill anyone, not that I wouldn’t have fun with them.”

Honor seemed far off now as I stormed forward. Whether he intentionally meant to give me the true first strike, or if he was just trying to taunt me, I wasn’t sure. But with my speed, I made sure I landed it, punching him straight across the face.

The Bear King stumbled backwards, surprised. Then he spit blood onto the ground. When he looked at me again, hatred and fury burned twin flames in his eyes. He growled, “You’ll pay for that,” and lunged forward.

He hit me twice, one in the ribs and once in the stomach. Each had the force of colliding with a truck. I grit my teeth as my feet slid across the forest floor. I didn’t give myself even a moment to recover before surging forward once more, my fingers curled, claw-like.

He started to shift as I approached, so I shifted too. He batted me away with a massive paw, and then roared, spittle flying out of his open mouth.

As a bear, the King was massive, larger in size even than my Alpha Wolf. He must have been an Alpha Bear, a rare breed, but it made sense. Bears were more isolationist than wolves, but they still valued strength. Their leader would be the strongest among them

If I could put him down, the others would be forced to following, knowing they couldn’t stand against me.

Lone Archer had been right. Remove the head of the snake and it dies. The rest would follow.

Growling, I surged forward, ready to strike.

battle dragged on for a few hours. I had landed most of the blows against the Bear King, but his endurance was high. He did not seem to show any suffering from his wounds. Though he had only hit me a handful of times, each blow would have been enough to kill a weaker werewolf. I didn’t think I could handle but a few more of those.

I knew he was as winded as me, though he was hiding it just as I was. Neither of us were willing to give up.

He raised himself up on his back legs and roared again. I stayed where I was cautious, even as he lowered himself to all fours again and came barreling toward me like a freight train.

Bears were faster than they looked, I’d learned, but still I misjudged his approach.

He plowed into me, sending me flying. I hit the hard earth, hard, whining once, loudly, as pain split through me. For any other wolf, this would have broken my back. I wasn’t sure that my back hadn’t broken too, but already, I felt the vertebrae snap back together, my healing factor fully recovered and fast as lightning.

But Gods, it hurt.

I wasn’t going to give up. Ever. But for a brief moment, I thought how easy it would be to just go to sleep.

But then, upside down, my gaze caught on the worried face of my lover, my mate. I couldn’t leave her behind. Not to the fate the Bear King had in mind for her. So, growling, I forced my body to move, getting back up to my feet again.
