Chapter 313
Lilian’s POV

My stomach dropped.
Grayson’s voice went tight. “How did it happen? When?”
“I don’t have any details,” Reggie replied. “I’ve only just received word. When we return to the Lycan palace, I’m sure we will hear more information.”
“I’m not going to the Lycan palace,” Grayson said. “If my father has died, there is no time to lose. I have to get back for the line of succession to continue. Only the Goddess knows what the Queen is plotting without me there.”
“You need rest before you are to face her,” I said softly. I worried for Grayson, wanted him well before he stepped back into danger. He was right to worry about the Queen, when she was likely the one who arranged for his capture. But, my feelings were in conflict. While I didn’t want Grayson in danger, my children were still there. Safely hidden in the mansion, but still inside the border. I needed to get to them, to help them escape, if necessary.
Grayson looked at me, and he must have been able to see the depth of my worry on my face.
“I have many reasons to return, and not all of them are about the crown,” he said.
His words held more weight than I fully understood, but I could tell, in part, he was speaking about the children.
“I can’t ask you to -” I started.
“You aren’t,” he replied.
“But you are weak. You need to rest.”
“I can’t rest while my family is in danger.”
He could have been talking about Josie and the others at the palace. Or even Prime Beta, or his other servants and friends. Maybe in part, he was. But in a larger part, again, I felt as if he was speaking about the children, though I had no proof of it.
A bit speechless, I simply nodded. To Reggie, I said, “We have to go back.”
“You don’t Lily,” Reggie said.
Gently, I shook my head. “My children are there.”
That was enough to silence his objections.
“I’ll get a car for you,” Reggie said instead. “I can send some of my guard with you.”
“The soldiers need to rest,” Grayson said. “Besides, it wouldn’t do to come back with an army. The Queen will take advantage of any kind of optics to make herself look good and me look terrible. If I’m going to overcome her trickery, I need to do so with openness and honesty to the people, not through violence.” He paused. “Not yet.”
“She had you kidnapped, Grayson, and intended to have you killed,” I said. “I don’t think she can be convinced…”
“It’s not her I have to convince, it’s the people,” Grayson said.
Reggie cast me a worried look, but he didn’t speak up again. And neither did I. When Grayson was like this, there was really no convincing him. It would be a wasted effort to even try.

“I’ll see to that car,” Reggie said and left the tent.
soon as he did, Grayson, growling, sat up more fully.
“Grayson,” I said.
“I’m fine.”
“You nearly died.”
“My wolf will heal quickly,” he said.
“But -”
“I’ll be alright, Lily. I promise.”
