Chapter 328

Lilian’s POV
Five days had passed since our escape, and life was finally showing a hint of normalcy. We had taken up residence with a farming family in a small community on the outskirts of the capital. Life was simpler here, thinking mostly about the day’s work on the field and in the house. Daily, Grayson went to his meetings with his advisors and the other warriors around. Sometimes I went with him, but lately, they’d been talking in circles, so I started staying at the residence and helping Sonya and her daughter with the daily chores around the farm.
The kids went with Sonya’s kids to the tiny local schoolhouse for classes during the day, several warriors discretely guarding them as well as the other children. This town, I had learned, was mostly filled with warriors of Grayson’s secret army. He’d been giving the town money for years, knowing things might eventually evolve into something like this.
Grayson, it seemed, had turned over every single stone in his preparations for the future.
When Grayson came home that afternoon, he found me hanging laundry on clotheslines behind the house. Wrapping an arm around me, he sneaked a kiss to my cheek.
“Let me help,” he said after, and reached for a damp towel in the basket by my feet.
We worked in silence for a few minutes, before he spoke up again. “I’ve been thinking. Maybe you should go back to the Lycan Kingdom. The warriors can scout ahead and find a safe path across the border. The Queen only has so many guards. She can’t be everywhere at once.”
I gave the offer some consideration. I wasn’t worried for myself, but for the children. In hiding, they remained safe, but how much longer could we safely hide before we were discovered again? For Grayson to make that offer once more meant that he didn’t have many contingency plans after this one.
He was worried. His plan for rebellion must have been drawing near, and he must have thought it wouldn’t be a short battle, but a length war that could go on maybe indefinitely.
The Queen’s coronation was looming. The only part of the rebellion plan that I was sure of was that the coronation was going to be the spark of the war. What would happen after that was in question.
“How can we leave you now?” I asked him.
His expression softened. He closed the distance between us again and kissed me once more.
“I need you all safe.”
“We are safer here than crossing the border,” I said. “Ben is working with her, and he knows I will prioritize the children. He’s probably at the border himself waiting for us to cross. We can’t go, not right now.”
He kissed my temple, and my cheek. A rain of soft, apologetic kisses fell on my face. “I’m sorry I lead you to this danger.”
“We’ll survive this,” I said. “Together.”
We held each other.
Nearby, Sonya’s elderly mother Joan watched us from the stairs. She smiled, and even laughed a little. “Young love,” she said. “You two make such a sweet family.”
I blushed deeply, hiding my face against Grayson’s shoulder.

“Thank you,” Grayson called. “We haven’t made it official yet, but I’m hoping she’ll marry me soon.”

Hang in there, young man,” Joan said. “With how softly she is looking at you, you won’t have to wait long for that yes.”
My embarrassment bloomed farther. Grayson just laughed and held me closer.
“Thank you. I’m hopeful.”
Joan chuckled as she went back into the house.
When we were alone again, I looked up at Grayson. “You shouldn’t encourage her.”
“Why not? It’s true, isn’t it?”
I didn’t know how to answer, so I just looked at him. He leaned in and kissed me.
