Chapter 330

That night, Grayson and I sat with the kids long enough for them to feel safe. When they finally fell asleep, Grayson and went across the hall to the room we shared. The rest of the house was already asleep.

We changed into our pajamas and then climbed into bed. At once, we curled into each other, holding onto each other. For a long time, we stayed like that without speaking.

Then, in the dark, I whispered, “We can’t stay here. The townspeople protected us and will continue to protect us, but it’s too dangerous. Ben only ordered their fields burned today, but what if he comes back? What if it’s worse next time?”

His arms tightened around me.

I continued, “I don’t want these people to continue to face danger because of us. I know they are choosing to. I know they want to protect us for the sake of the rebellion, but… Mark was hurt today. He could have died. If anything happens to them…”

“They know the risks,” he said. Before I could argue, he added, “But I agree. Our presence is endangering them. We’ve waited too long already to act. I’d hoped that we’d be able to live this fantasy just a little longer, but that’s selfish. When the war is done, then maybe….”

“Life won’t be like this in the castle,” I said.

“No,” he agreed. “But it doesn’t have to be bad either. I know you want a normal life for the kids, and I want that too. We can find a way to make it work.”

I was quiet a moment. “We have to leave here.”

“Yes,” he said. “In the morning, we’ll tell our new friends and we’ll move on. We can stay at the rebel camp. It lacks all creature comforts, but we will be safe there.”

“Will the children be safe?” I asked.

“Perhaps the children do not have to leave… for now. Ivory is in the house next door, and Alex and Madison have become good friends with all the children in the town.”

“I worry to leave them here.”

“It will be safer than taking them with us,” Grayson said. He kissed my forehead. “These people have proven we can trust them. Though I will also order a pair of the secret army to stay behind and guard them and the others of this town. With luck, Benedict will not return.”

The sound of Benedict’s name filled me with shame and regret. “I never should have trusted him.”

Grayson kissed me again, on the lips this time. “I was wary of him, and I still had no idea he would fall so far. You can’t blame yourself. He fooled us all.” Softer, he added, “He might have even fooled himself.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“When he sided with the Queen, I doubted he knew how far she would fall. Or what she would ask of him. But he doesn’t deserve sympathy. He should have stood against her.”

I nodded, unable to forget how he tried to slap Sonya, a pregnant woman. That was unforgivable.

“Do you think we’ll win this war?” I asked in the quiet. “If the Queen is willing to burn her own fields, what will

she do to her enemies?”

She has become a tyrant,” Grayson said. “The power has gone to her head. But we will stop her. I’ve been studying my entirely life on how to lead, preparing to serve my people. I will not allow her to ruin this kingdom my father and his father before him helped to carve and maintain.”

“You’ll be a good King,” I told him.

“I have to be,” he said. “I want the Kingdom to be one that my mate and children would be proud to call home”

By his mate, he meant me. And our children.
