Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 329

Chapter 329

Lillian’s POV

For a few more days, life stayed simple at the farm, at least for the kids and me. The kids would go to school with the other small town children, and I would help around the house or in the farm. It was the kind of life I could get used to. Hard work, yes, but without the complexity and backstabbing that came with trying to navigate a courtly life. The people had been friendly here, and the weather kind. The harvest was looking to be a good one.

With things like this, I could almost forget that we were in hiding. I could almost allow myself to be happy.

But then, I heard shouting.

I couldn’t understand what was being said, so many people calling, with a rumble of thunderous car engines underneath. It wasn’t until Joan stepped out onto the back porch and called for me to abandon the garden that I finally understood.

“Royal guard are coming! Quickly! You must hide!”

I rushed into the house, hiding against the wall beside the curtain.

“With luck, they will simply pass through,” Joan said. Outside, Sonya and Mark came out of the fields with some of the other locals, right as a swarm of black SUV’s with tinted windows drove too quickly into town, only to slam on their brakes in unison, creating a long, dangerous train.

Royal guards poured out of the SUV’s, each with a weapon ready. I gasped as Ben appeared from the SUV in the lead. He raised his hand and the guards fell in line behind him, under his command.

My chest ached seeing the man I had thought was a friend and ally standing so firmly on the other side of this war. Not just quietly supporting the Queen, but actively seeking us out by her command.

I was still coming to terms with how little I truly knew about Benedict.

“Oh, dear,” Joan said, her whisper the only sound in the house. I listened closely outside, hoping to hear what Ben said.

“There’s no need for this to turn violent!” Ben called out. “We are searching for a few people. Help us find them, and we will move along without causing any issue for you, your families, or your homes. Refuse to help us, however, and we will be forced to take action against you.”

Mark, Sonya’s husband and Joan’s son, stepped forward. “Who are you looking for?” he asked, pretending like he didn’t know.

“Traitors,” Benedict said. “The ex-prince Grayson. His mate, Lillian. And Lillian’s two children.”

“Children?” Sonya asked, coming to her husband’s side. “How could children be traitors?”

“You don’t have to understand why,” Ben snapped. “You don’t have to understand anything. The Queen has deemed them traitors and they will be dealt with.”

“Only monsters hurt children,” Sonya snapped.

Benedict lifted his hand to slap Sonya, but Mark stepped in the way, taking the blow.

Benedict growled, “You have no right to interfere.” He gestured to two of the guard who rushed forward. One hit him in the stomach with the butt of his rifle, while the other beat him with fists. When he was down on the ground, both men started kicking him.

“Please, stop!” Sonya begged, holding her stomach. She was pregnant again.

Ben whistled, and the guards backed off, moving with no emotion back to the line.

Sonya dropped to her husband’s side, cradling him in her lap.

“Tell me where they are,” Ben said, his voice scarier than I ever heard it. He was like a different person.

“We don’t know,” Sonya said, tears in her eyes.

I clenched my hand into a fist.

Ben looked at her for a moment, then turned to his guard. “Burn the fields,” he said. “Burn every field in this town until someone gives them up.”

The guards moved forward, and so did I, taking a step toward the door.

Joan stepped in front of me. “You can’t go out there.”

“I won’t let you all give up your livelihoods. How will you survive without the harvest?”

“Hope,” she said.

“That won’t feed you.”

“Your mate cannot lose you,” Joan said. “And we cannot lose our prince, or the rebellion dies. My son was beaten for you. We are losing our crops. Do not betray that sacrifice by giving into fear.”
