Chapter 332
Reginald’s POV
After leaving my car, I was ushered through the main door. “A room is being prepared for you,” said one of the servants. “Your things will be taken there. For now, we encourage you to enter the throne room where her Majesty the Queen is greeting honored guests such as yourself.”
“Thanks,” I said, more a grunt than an actual word, and followed the servant to the throne room, where I was introduced by an announcer and led inside.
Heading farther into the throne room, the Queen was already there, standing up by the throne her husband had only recently emptied. All in the room were watching her nervously like they worried she might have an outburst at any moment.
My Alpha ears picked up whispers from the corners.
“The King hasn’t even been interred yet.”
“He’s kept in a back room as he decays. It’s tragic.”
“Shh, someone might hear. You don’t want to end up in the dungeons, do you?”
Frowning, I looked around, searching for Grayson and Lillian. Surely Grayson wouldn’t condone his step-mother taking the throne before even his father was tended to. Or, at all.
Last I heard Grayson was to be the one in line to take the throne. How had things gotten so turned around? And where were Grayson and Lillian now? I saw no sight of them there in the throne room.
I did see Princess Josephine standing away from others, sipping on a glass of water. I’d met her a few times, thought her pleasant enough. As her mother was about to take the throne, she was unlikely a reliable source of information, but even if she fed me lies, I would rather hear it from her than from the others. I at least had a previous acquaintanceship with her.
As I came closer to her, she seemed to startle when she saw me, some of her water spilling from her glass.
“You’re frightened,” I noted.
“No, I… No. My apologies Prince Reginald. I just didn’t expect you.”
I narrowed my eyes at her slightly, not believing her at all. The notice of my arrival had been sent in weeks ago, and the announcer had just said my name. This was also a power shift that affected all of the werewolf community. Did she truly believe I would miss this?
“Sorry,” she said, lowering her gaze. She seemed nervous and jittery and not just from my having startled her. Stress lines creased her face. In my memories of her, she was always smiling, friendly and bright. This present version of her wasn’t the one I recognized.
“Don’t apologize,” I said. “There’s no harm done. Maybe you could tell me…”
