Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 333

Chapter 333

stepped closer. “You’ve been misinformed,” I said loudly. “Yes, Prince Grayson fought bravely. He even face the Bear King himself in a challenge for the kingdoms. But he won. He did not die. And last I saw him, he had just been told about the death of his father the King and was heading back here.”

She paled only slightly, giving me a sharp glare, before her face softened once more and she placed a hand to her chest. “You are right, of course. Forgive my fib. But understand I only tell it out of affection for my step-son and the man he used to be.”

“Used to be?” asked the visiting ambassador, still bold.

“He did come back from the war, but he was different. The war changed him. He became bitter and cold. He turned against his own family. I’m sorry to tell you all that he has become a traitor now, on the run. I’d hoped to spare his reputation, but…” She glanced at me.

Many others around her made motions of sympathy, whether through sad sounds or expressions, or too bringing their hands over their hearts as she was doing.

“You are a good mother, a good Queen, to try to protect him,” said one of the visitors.

“A symbol of empathy,” said another.

“I tried everything I could to convince him not to take the path he’s gone down,” the Queen said. “I’ve been searching for him, hoping to talk sense into him before he does something rash. But he’s truly lost his way. I fear he’s building a rebellion. People might actually be listening to him, not realizing the depth of his madness.”

The others nodded with sympathy.

I’d heard enough. Turning away from the Queen and that scene of blatant falsehood, I marched right back to Josephine. She startled again, nearly dropping her glass of water. I anticipated it this time, and caught it for her before it could slip from her hands.

“Thanks,” she whispered. “Sorry.”

“I’ve just spoken to your mother,” I said flatly. I’d entertain zero nonsense or deception from her, and wanted her to know it. “She has told many lies, but I want to know the truth. What is really going on around here? Where is Grayson? Where is my cousin and her children?”

Josephine swallowed thickly, then looked up at me, fear in her eyes. But that fear wasn’t for me.

“I don’t even know where to start,” she said.
