Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 337

Chapter 337

Lulian’s POV

I froze, unsure if Ben had already recognized me.

My hesitation seemed to annoy him. “Maid. Did I not make myself clear? Fill. This. Glass.”

If I was a regular maid, I would hurry to accommodate this request. In order to keep my cover, as much as I didn’t want to, I stepped into the room. I picked up two empty wine bottles before I found one that still had wine in it, and I poured it into the glass.

This wasn’t easy, because he kept sloshing it around, tipping the glass this way and that.

He peeked his eyes open to look at me, but they were unfocused, hazy. The man was clearly drunk out of his mind. Relief passed through me. He likely wouldn’t recognize me.

“I must be dreaming,” he mumbled. “Because you look just like…’

The relief vanished and panic filled my heart.

He gazed into my face, and I held my breath.

But with a sigh, his eyes closed and he passed out. The glass slipped out of his hand and clattered down onto the ground, shattering and spilling all the wine I’d just poured onto the floor.

Ben didn’t notice, snoring loudly.

I rubbed a hand over my face, trying to calm down.

Whether he had recognized me or not hardly mattered with just how drunk he was. He’d wake later and not know what was real or not, if he even remembered this moment at all.

Taking a moment, I really looked at him. He was pitiful, wine stains all over his clothes. His hair was messed, a rough, unkempt beard growing on his chin. He looked nothing like the charming playboy I remembered. It was as if his entire self had been burned out of him from the inside out.

He was a shell. A drunken, unkempt, odorous shell.

Despite all he had done, I almost felt sorry for him.

The least I could do, I supposed, was my job. After waiting a moment, to be certain he was well and good passed out and likely to be for a while, I wiped off my hands and set to work.

I had been directed to clean the sitting rooms, after all. If I made sure to pick up all the glass pieces and take away all the bottles of wine, empty and full, from this place, it wasn’t because I still held any lingering feelings of friendship for Ben.

Well, maybe there was some nostalgia involved.

In another life, perhaps we could have stayed friends. A life where he hadn’t chosen to support the Queen and try to hunt Grayson and me down.

I wondered if his drinking emerged because of his choices. Perhaps he was regretting the decision he had made. There wasn’t much to be done about it now, however. He had to live with what he’d done.

For the past, the version of him I had wanted to believe was real, I cleaned the sitting room. Then, when I was down, I turned off the light and closed the door so he could sleep this off without being disturbed again.

Moving onward, I headed into a hallway that housed many of the offices for the royal family and high ranking members of the nobility. No one seemed to be here now, or so I thought – until one of the doors opened.

I stilled for a moment, worried about being seen, but I quickly scolded myself. I was just a maid, disguised. No one would look at me twice.

Holding my mop like a shield, I started to clean the floor of the hallway, when I heard voices.
