illy?” Josie gasped.

Reginald went rigid. Then he walked toward me swiftly, took me by the arm, and dragged me straight back to the room he and Josie had just come out of. Josie followed us in and closed the door again.
“What in the world are you doing here?” Reginald asked. “Do you have any idea how dangerous it is for you to be here? If the Queen were to see you… If she were to know you are here, she would have you killed.”
“That is why I’m disguised,” I said. “What are you doing here? And why are you snooping around?”
“I received an invitation to a coronation,” Reggie replied. “You can imagine my surprise, I hope, when I saw the coronation wasn’t for Grayson. I came to see for myself what was going on. And now that I found you, I can drag you out of here and get you out of danger. Where are the children?”
“They are safe for the moment,” I said. “But I’m not going anywhere.”
“Don’t be difficult, Lily’
“And you don’t be stubborn, Reggie. There’s a whole plan in place, and it depends on me -” I bit my tongue suddenly, remembering the other person in the room. I looked back at Josie. We had once been friends, and unlike Benedict, I believed we still were. Still could be. But if the person we were plotting against was her mother…
“Josephine is trustworthy,” Reggie said. “She’s the only one who’s been telling me the truth around here. She’s been helping me, too. This is the King’s study. We found his journal. We’re hoping it will tell us something of the Queen’s motives.”
“She only cares about power,” I said. “What more do we need to know?”
“Know thy enemy,” Reggie said. “If you truly want to stop her, fully understanding her is vital. Now, tell me what your plan is. Why are you here, and what depends on your being here? Understand that if I find your answer unsatisfactory, I will drag you out of here and to safety.”
“Grayson has been building an army,” I said, and explained the majority of the plan. I kept some of the finer details private, still nervous about Josephine’s presence, even with Reggie’s vouching for her. I knew personally how difficult it could be to act against a parent, even when they were terrible and didn’t deserve compassion.
My mistrust wasn’t because I thought Josephine hated me, but because I suspected she still loved her mother, despite her faults.
“A rebellion,” Reginald said, thoughtful. He considered it a moment and then sighed heavily. “I don’t like the idea of you being in the middle of all this danger. And I’m going to have a serious word with Grayson when this is over. But… unfortunately I can understand the necessity.”
“You’ll help?” I asked.
