270 No Way Out
Ratty Ray looked down at his lackeys, each one now gripping a sharp arrow and aiming at him.
Suddenly, a foul stench filled the air. A yellow stream trickled from his dangling figure, the source of the pungent smell.
The man in camouflage glanced at him with disdain before barking at the lackeys, “What are you waiting for? Anyone who doesn’t hit their mark in fifteen minutes will join him up there.”
That order lit a fire under the lackeys. Without hesitation or mercy, they prepared to fire.
Jason extended his hand, and the silent, stern bodyguard behind him placed a clean silk handkerchief in his palm. Gently, Jason took Seraphina’s trembling hand and began wiping the blood from her fingers with slow, deliberate movements.
“Let’s go.”
Seraphina hesitated. She didn’t want to leave–not yet. She wanted to see it with her own eyes. She wanted to witness Ratty Ray’s pain, his fear. She wanted to see him pay for Sebastian’s suffering.
“Be good.” Jason’s large hands softly covered her eyes, shielding her from the scene.
“He’s not worth it,” he murmured. Then, as though reading her thoughts, he added, “Some things aren’t meant for you to see. If you stay here, things will only be complicated. Do you want that?”
Understanding his implication, Seraphina turned and left without another word.
Behind her, Ratty Ray hung in the air, his mind racing as realization dawned on him. He understood all too well what awaited him.
“No! Please, no…” he screamed, his voice more harrowing than when he’d faced a barrage of
arrows.
The Maybach rolled away from the warehouse, leaving the chaos behind. As it reached Heartlake Island, Jason’s phone buzzed.
“Is he dead?” Jason asked calmly.
“No,” the voice on the other end replied in a clipped, matter–of–fact tone.
Jason quirked a brow, his expression unreadable.
Seraphina turned her sharp gaze toward him, eyes fixed on the phone as she listened intently.

“In that case,” Jason instructed coldly, “let him suffer. Send him to Emery.”
The mention of “Emery” made the hardened man on the other end flinch despite himself. He glanced down at Ratty Ray, still clinging to life like a cockroach, and a flicker of pity crossed his
cold eyes.
Perhaps Ratty Ray would regret not succumbing to his injuries here and now.
“Understood.”
After hanging up, the man motioned to two others, who promptly dragged Ratty Ray away.
When Jason ended the call, Seraphina broke the silence. “What’s that place?”
Jason’s voice softened. “It’s a place you can enter but never leave.” He added nothing more- some truths weren’t meant for a good girl like her to know.
Seraphina remained silent for a few seconds, then chose not to press further. She didn’t ask about the men at the warehouse or their identities. Nor did she show any curiosity.
In the biting chill of early spring rain, Seraphina made her way through a maze of narrow alleyways in a cramped neighborhood of tightly packed, self–built houses. She stopped before a door, checking the house number, then walked to one particular entrance.
A middle–aged woman with a grocery basket descended the stairs and paused to glance at her. “Are you here to see the Meadows couple?” the woman asked.
Seraphina turned to her. “Yes.”
“Were you scammed by them too?” the woman asked, eyeing her elegant attire.
“Yes.”
“Well, you’re a bit late,” the woman revealed. “A few days ago, the police took the Meadows couple away. Let me tell you, those two were notorious for causing trouble. About a week ago, they were bragging about making fifty grand, saying even the cops couldn’t touch them. But not long after, a group of officers showed up and took them both away. Turns out, they finally got evidence of their extortion. Seems they were even tied to a murder case.”
