When the third–to–last lot came up, Seraphina, who had been silent until then, broke her silence. “Mr. Wilson, I think it’s time for us to make a move.” She nodded toward the lot she had previously mentioned.

Before Mr. Wilson could respond, Aidan jumped in with his trademark derision. “Dad already made it clear–we’re aiming for Lot One. Lot Three might catch your eye, but it’s not a good fit for Whitewood Group. Business isn’t about personal preference. Don’t worry; I’ll send you some books later so you can brush up on the basics.”

Seraphina didn’t dignify his comment with a response. She ignored him as if he wasn’t even there.

“Mr. Wilson,” she continued, undeterred, “the competition for Lot One will be intense. With so many parties vying for it, the bidding is guaranteed to get aggressive. Instead of putting all our hopes on one plot, it might be wiser to secure Lot Three. At least this way, Whitewood Group won’t walk away empty–handed.”

Wilson hesitated and glanced at the appraiser for input.

The appraiser nodded. “Miss Seraphina has a point. The starting bids are already high, and the final price will likely exceed our projections. Securing Lot One at that price won’t be easy.”

Mr. Wilson paused, clearly torn. He had his reservations but remembered Oberon’s instructions to involve Aidan in the decision–making process to provide him with some hands- on experience.

Seraphina shot Aidan a sly, mocking smile.

“We’re not settling for Lot Three,” Aidan said firmly, his tone leaving no room for discussion. “If we’re bidding, it’s for the best.”

“And if the final price goes beyond our budget?” Seraphina countered. “We’ll be left with nothing. To be honest, securing Lot Three as a backup is just a good business.”

“Playing it safe isn’t Whitewood’s style,” Aidan said dismissively.

“Aidan, don’t let your ego do the bidding.” she taunted. “Can you guarantee we’ll win Lot One? Are you that confident?”

“Absolutely,” he said without hesitation.

This prime plot is located adjacent to…” He launched into a detailed description of the land before finally making his point. “The starting bid is seventy million, with a minimum increment of one million per raise.”

The gavel struck, and the room came alive.

“Bidder Seven, seventy–five million!”

“Bidder Twelve, eighty million!”

“Bidder Twenty–four, ninety–one million!”

“Bidder Seven, ninety–eight million!

“Bidder Ten places one hundred million! Anyone for a higher offer?”

At that moment, Aidan raised his paddle with confidence.

“Bidder Three, one hundred and thirty million!”

Not long after, Ronald, seated quietly in a corner, lifted his paddle without hesitation.
