Evie’s pov

My breath hitched. His eyes don’t waver from mine as he takes a step forward and cups my chin. I can step away, I can turn my head away but I stay planted there. Unable to move.

Because a part of me…..believed his words.

My eyes move from his to flick down to his mouth. I’m pulled into that trance again where I can only focus on him.

His pink lips, the way they look so soft. The way they move as he speaks and the way the tip of his tongue darts out to brush against his lower lip to leave a wet trail.

“But Alpha, they were your parents,” Arielle’s words cut through the fog in my mind and pulls me out of the trance.

I clenched my jaw and stepped back, putting space between us before I did something stupid…..like forgive him too easily or fall into his arms the way my heart so desperately wanted to. “Go to them Ryan. She’s right, they were your parents.”

“They are not my parents. Not after what they’ve done,” he turns to Arielle and snaps. “Burn them to ashes and throw them far from the territory. They don’t deserve to be buried on Silver Blood pack. Not when they were the ones to destroy it in the first place.”

Arielle gasped, and so did the other wolves around. Ryan’s expression remains cold despite the hushed whispers now floating in the room. Everyone was stunned, including me.

“Alpha,” Arielle tried again, her tone way softer than it had been a while ago. She sounded almost pleading. “Are you sure about that? I know you must be angry at them but I don’t think you should go to this extreme-

“Do as I say Arielle. Do not make them stay in this territory longer than necessary.” His eyes narrowed down on her. “Do not make me repeat myself.”

“I-” her lips parted and she bowed her head and nodded. “As you wish Alpha.”

She turned to leave and Ryan turned to me. I looked around the room and watched the eyes of the others staring at us. “We can’t speak here,” I told Ryan as I watched the accusing eyes of the others around us.

His jaw tightened slightly as his gaze swept across the room, taking in the whispers, the stares, the tension hanging thick in the air. “Fine,” he murmured and I motioned for him to follow me.

He does and I am shocked that he remains quiet as he follows me to my room. Of course, the other wolves around would spread rumors the second they see us but it didn’t really matter right now.

Ryan and I needed to have an important conversation and I had promised him it would be tonight.

The second we entered the room, I heard him close the door behind us. The air here is much thicker and for a second, I almost regret bringing him into my room so we could be alone.

I didn’t trust myself when I was alone with him.

I stayed close to the center of the room as I intended to put just enough distance between us to breathe. However, every instinct 1 had was painfully aware of where he stood behind me.

“You never answered my question back there,” he suddenly rips through the silence.

I turned around slowly to find him still standing by the door but his eyes were already on me. Planted on me like I was the most precious thing he’d ever seen in his life.

I swallowed as the look sent tingles racing through me. “No,” I whisper, looking away from him for a moment before returning my gaze back to him.

“No?” He tasted the word on his tongue like it was bitter.

I wrapped my arms around my body but it wasn’t for warmth. No. It was to steady myself. “I wasn’t going to tell you,” I admitted, forcing the words out before I could take them back. “I didn’t plan to. Not then. Not ever.”

His eyes drop to the floor for a second and when they lift up to look at me, hurt swims in them. “Why?”

“Because you broke me, Ryan!” I snapped, the emotions I had been holding back finally spilling over. “That night…..everything that happened after,” My eyes narrowed on his face. “You don’t get to stand here and act like you didn’t give me every reason to not tell you about my child!”

“Our child,” he corrected, his voice a lot firmer.

I looked away and nodded. “Our child. I’m,” I looked back at him and he took a step forward but I shook my head. “Sorry. I thought I had been doing the right thing then. You must understand. I thought I was protecting Atlas from you.”

His eyes soften, then his gaze sweeps over me slowly before he speaks. “I can’t blame you Evie,” his jaw clenched. “After all the lies they fed you about me wanting to have you dead after that night….I can’t blame you.”

My heart flickered. I didn’t expect that…..

I expected him to lash out and demand me to give him Atlas. I was expecting him to be the bad guy…..

‘I told you he wasn’t lying,’ Serena purred. ‘Can we forgive him now?’

‘Even if we do forgive him Serena,’ I whispered. ‘It won’t change the past.’

‘Why keep being in the past when we can focus on the future?’

“Evie,” Ryan said and took a step forward again and this time I didn’t stop him. Seeing that I didn’t look unhappy, he took that as an invitation to come closer.

“I want to tell you the truth even though I’ve told you a good bit,” he said, staring at me cautiously like he was scared I’d disappear or run away. “But I want to start at the very beginning of all this.”

But I didn’t move, I stood where I am and silently told him to continue. He drew in a relieved breath and started to speak.

“That night after I found out you were my mate, my father called me in,” his jaw clenches. “I told him I didn’t give a damn about the prophecy and I would choose you,” his fists clench at his side as he recalls the memory.

“But he threatened your life and said if I didn’t choose Kimberly, he’d harm you. I couldn’t let that happen. Especially when I was not alpha yet and he had alliances.” He looked away. “So I agreed to mate with Kimberly to save you.”

My heart clenched painfully.

“But that night I couldn’t stop wanting and needing you. I couldn’t stop. 1-” his eyes peer into mine intensely. “I mated you and lost my virginity to you because I wanted to Evie. God, that was the best night of my life,” he swallowed.

It had been mine too until you hurt me. I wanted to say but I held my tongue and let him explain himself.

“But I also knew that what I did would put you in more danger, especially when Kimberly found us,” his jaw clenched so hard I was afraid he’d break it. “She would’ve told him what had happened and he’d hurt you Evie. Hell, he’d kill you.”

My stomach twisted uneasily.

He steps closer and the air grows heavier. “I couldn’t let that happen, so I did what I thought would protect you from them.”

“By rejecting me,” I whispered.

His eyes swim with regret. ” And I regretted every second of it. You have no idea how much willpower it took to pretend like you meant nothing. I thought pushing you away hard enough would make you hate me and to stay away. But I hadn’t expected you to

run away.”

I took in a shaky breath and shook my head, my vision blurring. “Why did you stay to mark her? It was so painful that night Ryan

-I-

I pressed my lips hard and shook my head. Everything I thought I had known was a lie. He had rejected me for my own protection and I hated him for it.

“I only marked her. I never slept with her. I’ve only slept with one woman in my life Evie,” he whispered. “And that’s you.”

My breath staggers in my throat as I stared at him and searched his face for any sign of a lie or any flicker of deceit I could cling to so I wouldn’t have to feel this but there was nothing.
