Chapter 105
Serena
When I woke up in the morning, the first thing I did was take my phone and call the lawyer. Kieran has decided to let me go there was no need for any kind of delay, it was necessary that I submitted the divorce documents and he
gets to sign it.
“Hello Serena.”
My lawyers voice quenched all hope inside of me. His words were natural but his tone and the manner in which
the words left his mouth seemed to be a harbinger of bad
news.
My heart skipped; what was he going to say or do? Was there something wrong?
“Dr. Thawthorne, I’ve been meaning to call you.” He paused.
My breath stopped as I waited for him to continue. He wanted to call me which meant he had something to say bygif it was that important, would he forget?

“I’m afraid I can no longer represent you in this matter.”
My heart sank.
Oh, this was it.
He had finally dropped the case.
Although I knew a day like today would come, I never expected my heart to sting so much.
“Why?” I asked, my mask could not allow for a little bit of
mystery.
“I’m unable to continue with the divorce proceedings. I apologize for the inconvenience.”
Why was it always this way? Why could things never go in my direction? Every step I took toward freedom, the ground shifted beneath my feet; every door I opened, someone slammed it shut from the other side.
What did I expect? That this would go smoothly? That Kieran would sit still while I dismantled the marriage he refused to release? My fingers tightened around the phone; my grip pressed so hard the case bit into my palm

every contract and every institution in this city?
It has to be him. There is no one else with the reach, no one else with the power. Kieran was the only person on this earth who could make a phone call and make an entire legal team disappear from my life.
He could not force me to stay married through love, so he was cutting the ropes that held my escape together.
I wiped my face with the back of my hand; the tears kept coming but I pressed my teeth together, swallowed the sob before it escaped.
I could not lose hope. I had to get out of this marriage; there was no version of my life where I stayed, no version where I raised this baby inside those walls, no version where I woke up beside that man every morning for the rest of my existence.
I would find another way.
My phone buzzed with a text.
Sophie: I’m outside. Come out.

away by a fury so sudden my hands shook.
This woman ruined my marriage, stole my husband’s attention, paraded through my life with her fake tears, her fake fragility, everything I was facing now was as a result of the two of them and even now, I have let them be, thy cannot just let me live my life.
I stood, walked to the front door, pulled it open, stepped
outside.
Sophie stood by the gate; her hair was pulled back, her makeup heavy, her dress fitted close to her body.
“Are you tired of chasing other people’s husbands?” My voice hit the air before she could open her mouth. “Why are you here, Sophie? What more do you want?”
Her eyes widened. “I didn’t do anything. Kieran, I are in love-”
“Then go be with the man you love.” I took a step toward her. “Leave me alone. Leave my family alone. Stop showing up at my house, stop inserting yourself into my marriage, stop breathing my air.”

underneath showed through. “You should stop acting so proud, Serena.” Her chin lifted. “Everybody knows the father of your child is not Kieran.”
“So?”
Sophie blinked; the response must’ve caught her off guard.
What? Was she expecting me to be some kind of woman ashamed and guilt stricken? Should I feel sorry do
Kieran? Did he feel th same for me?
“Yes, I’m pregnant,” I said. “What does that have to do with you?”
“It has everything to do with me because—”
“It has nothing to do with you.” I held her stare. “Occupy your time getting Kieran to sign the divorce papers. That would be useful. Instead of standing on my doorstep, being stupid.”
I turned, walked back inside, shut the door.
Myphone rang first thing in the morning.

Misha’s name sat on the screen; my breath seized, my heart hammered, shame flooded my chest.
Anytime I saw his name, I was reminded of what he had done for me just to ensure me divorce.
He had proudly told Kieran that he was the father. But what did he want now? Did Kieran throw a fuss? Was he at the hospital?
What about the other guy? Is Kieran out of there now?
