Chapter 110
Serena
Three days passed.
My parents did not come.
On the first day, I told myself they were tired. The drive was long, the visit drained them, they needed rest. They would come tomorrow.
On the second day, I paced the cell. Four steps to the wall, four steps back. My belly led the way, heavy, round. The food the guards brought was bland, cold, tasteless. I ate it anyway. The baby needed it even if my appetite was gone.
Something was not right.
Why did nobody come? Why had my mother not sent me a message through the guards? Why had my father not pressed his palm against the glass again?
On the third day, I couldn’t take it anymore.
1 asked the guard for a phone. He handed me one witholle

I dialed my mother’s number.
It rang for a while but the call never connected.
I dialed my father.
No answer.
My chest tightened. I hung up, redialed, held the phone so tight against my ear the plastic cut into my skin.
My parents wouldn’t ignore the call knowing I was the one calling.
Something was wrong.
I dialed Josh.
No answer.
My chest kept rising and falling. I couldn’t keep my thoughts clear. Were they hurt? Was something wrong?
Was there an accident on their way to come see me?
These questions would not get answered by anyone and05

so the only option I had was to call one person.
I dialed Kieran.
He answered on the second ring it was almost like he had been waiting for me to call.
“Have you heard from my parents?” My voice shook as I went straight to the point. “I cannot reach them. Not my mother, not my father, not Josh.”
My question was met with silence. That alone made my chest cave in. I pressed the phone to my ear as if I could hear him from the other side.
“Your father was fired from his job,” Kieran said. “Your mother suffered a heart attack yesterday. She’s in the hospital.”
What?
That cannot be.
There was no way my mother would be in a hospital and I
wasn’t told.

This couldn’t be happening to them. I could not take care of my family from over here, my father just lost his job, how was he going to manage. How would they be able to pay for the hospital fees?
This was such a horrible timing….
Wait…
The timing.
This couldn’t be Kieran’s doing, was it? He was not horrible, he wouldn’t get my father fired just because he wanted me back.
Wasn’t this a sick man?
“Did you do this?” My voice was a whisper; the rage sat beneath it, deep, volcanic. “Kieran. Did you have my father fired? You know thats the reason she had an heart attack, right? Were you responsible for it?”
“Your mother’s health was already fragile, Serena.” He said calmly.
couldn’t be. He would not do this.

“If you did this,” I said, “then whatever piece of me still held fondness for you, whatever memory of the man I married still sat in my chest, all of it is gone. Gone. You killed it.”
“Have you made your decision?” His voice carried no guilt, no shame. “The only way to take care of your family is to leave that cell.”
He knew. He knew I would fold. He definitely was behind my father getting fired because he wanted me back. He knew I wouldn’t let my parents suffer.
My mother was in a hospital.
My father lost his income.
Josh was alone.
Every door I pushed on was locked. Only one remained, and Kieran held the key.
“I’ll come back,” I said and my heart cracked instantly.
I had tried my best to leave the marriage only to be dragged back by his cunning nature.

What did he even want from me when he had a woman he loved? He had the test result stating my baby wasn’t his,
why has he decided to make my life hell?
“Good,” he said. “I’ll have you released. But you will sign some documents first.”
His words brought me back to reality.
“What documents?”
“A legal agreement. Mark will bring them to you within the hour.”
The call ended.
I sat on the bench with the dead phone in my hand.
How did I get here?
Mark arrived within the hour. He walked into the visiting room with a folder in his hand, a pen in his breast pocket.
He placed the folder on the table, opened it to the first
