Chapter 112
Serena
We got in the car, Kieran beside me while Mark drove.
I stared out the window. My bag sat on my lap. My phone was in my hand.
His eyes were on the road, far away from my face.
I opened my messages, scrolled to Sophie’s number I never really saved, but has somehow gotten quite acquainted with, started typing.
Kieran has been thinking of you. He will not say it but I know him. Come to the hospital today, he is there visiting my parents. Please come.
I stared at the words. My thumb hovered over send.
Was I really doing this? Was I really going to drag Sophie back into this mess? The woman who ruined my marriage? The woman who paraded through my life with fake tears?

I was going to.
Because if Sophie came, if she and Kieran stood in the same room and the old pull between them flared back to life, he might remember why he had chosen her in the first place. He might realize that the woman he belonged with was not the one sitting beside him in this car. He might let me go.
I pressed send.
My phone vibrated ten seconds later.
Sophie: Oh my God, Serena, thank you. I’ll come.
I slid the phone into my bag. My heart was pounding. My
hands were cold.
Kieran glanced at me from the driver’s seat.
“You okay?”
“Fine.”
He did not ask again, he took his eyes away from me.

My mother was in a private room on the fourth floor. The nurse at the desk waved us through without asking questions.
My father stood up the moment the door opened. His eyes landed on me, then on Kieran, then on our joined steps into the room.
“Serena.” My father’s voice broke. He crossed the room, wrapped his arms around me. “My girl.”
I hugged him. My eyes burned, but I held the tears back.
My mother was in the bed. An IV ran into her arm, a monitor beeped beside her head, her hair was flat against the pillow. Her eyes lit up when she saw me.
“Mom.” I walked to the bed, sat on the edge, kissed her
forehead.
“You’re out.” Her voice was thin. “Baby, you’re out.”
“I’m out.”
My father pulled up a chair. Kieran stood against the wall, his hands in his pockets. Watching.

I turned to my parents.
“Mom, Dad.” I took a breath, already prepared for the reaction I was about to get from them. “I need to tell you something. Kieran and I are getting back together. I have moved back into his home.”
My mother’s face fell.
My father stepped forward. “Serena—’
“It is my choice, Dad.” I said quickly before he could say anything that would destroy my heart.
“No, it is not.” His voice was raw. “This is because of us. Serena, no-”
“Dad.”
“We never wanted you to carry this.” My mother’s eyes filled with tears. “We never wanted our problems to drag you back to him. Baby, we are so sorry. We did not want
this.”
My chest cracked.

my parents end up apologizing to me for circumstances Kieran engineered to break me?
“It is not your fault,” I said. “None of this is your fault.”
Kieran stepped forward from the wall.
“Frederick.” His voice was warm. He was back to performing the role of the great son-in-law. “You do not need to worry about work. You do not need to look for another job. I will take care of everything. Whatever your income was, I will match it, whatever bills you have, I will handle them.”
My father’s back stiffened. “We do not want to be in your debt, Kieran.”
“It is not debt.” Kieran’s voice stayed even. “You are my family. This is what family does.”
“No-”
“Please.” Kieran smiled at my mother. He smiled at my father. “I am happy to do this. I want to do this. Let me.”

But how could they easily let him do this when all that he 574 had done for my family had been recorded and brought

to them as a debt they needed to pay?
My mother pulled me closer, her thin fingers gripping mine.
“Serena,” she whispered, “what is happening? Are you okay?”
“I am okay, Mom.” My smile was tight. “I am happy. We are fixing things.”
She searched my face.
I kept smiling, trying my best to convince her. I never wanted her to feel this was all her fault. It wasn’t. They wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for that demon.
Kieran kept talking. Josh would go back to school. Private tutor if needed. The family would move into a house he had prepared for them, closer to the hospital.
Everything would return to normal. Our marriage was strong, our baby was on the way, all would be well.
He said it with such confidence I almost believed him.

forehead.
My wolf stirred, she had been unresponsive for a while now, this sudden kiss had woken her up.
Sh instantly pressed toward Cora, a sudden warmth, a small hum, a familiarity that scared me more than anything he said.
I hated it. I hated my own body for reacting to his mouth on my skin, hated Aina for not hating him the way I did, hated the bond I supposedly severed for still reaching
toward him.
I pulled back.
“Let us go, Kieran.” My voice was sharp. “My mother needs rest.”
My parents watched us. My mother’s face said she knew I was lying about everything.
My father kissed my cheek at the door. His eyes were wet.
“Call me,” he whispered against my ear. “Anytime. If anything happens.”

I nodded.
We stepped out into the corridor.
Sophie stood ten feet away.
She was dressed in a blue dress that fit her waist, heels, her hair swept up, her makeup fresh. She had taken time to put in effort into her looks and it showed. She truly
cared for him.
The same way I used to.
My heart kicked. My plan was working.
“Kieran.” Her voice was the breathy voice I heard her use on him for years. She walked up to him. “I’ve been so worried. Are you okay? You have not answered my calls.”
Kieran stopped. I watched him.
Here it comes, I thought. Here comes the spark that would set me free. The relief. The old look.
“What are you doing here?” Kieran asked in a rather cold
voice.
