Chapter 114
Kieran

The phone rang at two in the morning.
I reached for it on the nightstand. Sophie’s name was on the screen.
I almost did not answer. I stared at the screen for a
couple of seconds with no reaction whatsoever. Bringing Serena back into my life was a chance for me to get rid of the mistakes of the past and Sophie was one of those
mistakes.
She was the main mistake that ruined my marriage.
However, I still owed her so much and for her call to come in so late, it could mean that there was a problem.
I answered.
“Kieran.” Her voice was shaking. “Please. Please. It is Ethan. He is burning up. His fever is so high I cannot bring it down. My mother is shouting at me, she will not helpone, I do not know what to do—”

I sat up.
I rolled my eyes. “Call the ambulance, Sophie.”
“Please, Kieran, please come-” she kept crying when she could have easily called the ambulance.
“Sophie, call the ambulance. It is the fastest-”
“Kieran?”
I turned.
Serena was laying beside me, her eyes open void of any form of fatigue.
“Is that Sophie?” Her voice was flat.
“Serena-”
“Is her child sick?”
“Yes.” I answered honestly.
She shifted on the bed into a more comfort position.

“And you are telling her to call an ambulance?” Her voice

rose slightly, almost like she was upset that was an option I was providing to Sophie. “Is this what a father does, Kieran? Your son is sick and you are lying in bed telling his mother to figure it out? I cannot believe this. Go to her.”
“I do not want to leave,” I said.
The words surprised me the moment they came out. But they were true. I did not want to leave this bed. I did not want to walk out of this house like I used to.
It was situations like these that made the distance between Serena and I grow.
I wanted this marriage to start putting itself back
together, not fall apart again over a phone call from Sophie.
Serena rolled her eyes.
“You are lying,” she said. “Go.”
“Serena.”
“Gq. What is more important right now is your child and

I sat there for a moment. But she had already turned her back to me and was going back to sleep. Why would she suddenly want me to go take care of her?
Serena hated the idea of Sophie and her child, had she developed a resignation towards them?
If I did not go, she would spin this into proof of everything she already believed about me. Dismissive father.
I got up.
“I will be back soon.” I planted a kiss tl her forehead before I walked out of the room.
Sophie’s house was lit up when I pulled into the driveway. Every window in the front of the house was on.
I could hear the shouting from the driveway.
I did not knock. The front door was already ajar. I simply just walked in.
Sophie’s mother stood in the living room. Her hair was in à bonnet, her robe was tied tight over her nightgown, her

face was twisted in a way I had never seen it twisted before. She was pointing at Sophie.
“Take your child and get out!” Her mother’s voice cracked. “I did not sign up for this, Sophie! I am too old for midnight fevers and screaming children and a daughter who cannot keep herself together! You will leave this house tonight!”
Sophie stood in the middle of the living room with Ethan in her arms. His eyes were closed as his head was pressed against her chest. Tears streamed from her eyes watching her mother send her away.
When she turned towards the entrance, her eyes fell on
“Kieran.” Her voice broke. She took a step toward me.
“You came.”
I walked towards her and placed a hand over Ethan’s head. The boy was too hot. His skin burned abnormally
hot.
“We are going to the hospital,” I said.

The hospital was quiet at this hour. The nurse at the desk saw the state of Ethan and called the doctor immediately. They took him away.
The doctor came out forty minutes later.
“The fever is high but manageable. We are bringing it down. The boy will need to stay for a few nights, he is dehydrated, his throat is raw, we want to run a couple of tests.”
“Thank you.” I said to the doctor.
Beside me, Sophie was smiling pitifully, her eyes filled with tears.
I pulled my car keys out of my pocket. “I am heading
home.” I announced it to her.
I had spent more than an hour away from home already and I told Serena I would be back.
Sophie suddenly lifted her eyes to meet mine, the small smile from the news of the doctor had been wiped off.

pain.
“Your son is being taken care of. The doctors are here. You should stay with him.” I said to her.
“Kieran-”
Sophie’s eyes rolled back. Her knees buckled. I caught her under the arms before she hit the floor.
“Doctor.” My voice climbed. “Doctor, she just fainted-”
Nurses rushed towards me and a stretcher was brought. Sophie was placed on the stretcher and taken away.
Fuck!
Why did she have to faint now?
I had to wait again for whatever was wrong with Sophie to be figured out. Why would she suddenly faint? Was something wrong with her?
The doctor came out of Sophie’s room.
