Chapter 119

Serena

My hand went to his chest, flat, and I shoved. His mouth pulled back from mine.

Lofting my eyes, I was met with the most alluring yet infuriating smile..

The faint dimple showed at the side of his face, that dimple I used to love.

My chest pulled tight. Aina purred again inside me, longed for him, pressed toward the bond like a needy girl.

I wanted to slap him across the face.

I wanted to grab his collar and pull him back to me.

I wanted to lock myself in the office bathroom and

scream.

Instead, I stayed rooted, glaring at him.

He stepped closer and his head dipped down to my ears.09

“We are married, Serena.” His voice was quiet. His breath was warm. “This is expected of us.”

He pressed a kiss behind my ear, sending a surge of arousal through my body.

And just like that, he turned around and left.

I stood at the door of my department with my fingers shaking against the handle. My face was hot and my annoying wolf would not stop purring.

“Dr. Thawthorne?”

I turned.

Misha stood about ten feet away, a file in his hand, a young man beside him. The young man was tall, maybe twenty-two, dark hair, a small stack of folders tucked under his arm.

The young man had a friendly smile on his face directed

at me.

“Dr. Laskin.” I cleared my throat. Straightened my dress. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” Misha’s eyes flickered to the hallway where Kieran had ]walked off. “I wanted to introduce you to your new secretary.”

“Hello, Dr. Thawthorne.” The young man stepped forward, held out his hand. His handshake was firm, his voice was professional. “My name is Jacques. I will be handling your schedule, your correspondence, your patient files. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

“Thank you, Jacques.” I smiled at him. The smile came easy. He had a nice face, warm without being suggestive of anything else. “I hope you have patience. I am new to this building.”

“So am I.” He grinned. “We can get lost together.”

Misha chuckled. “Jacques started here three weeks ago. He is sharp. You will like working with him.”

“I am sure I will.”

Misha turned to me. “Your department is yours. Jacques has your patient list for the day; he will walk you through it. I have assigned you six cases to start with. Four are routine. Two are high profile, I want you on those. I know

you need the experience, and I know you have been through a lot, so I wanted to make sure the work was waiting for you when you were ready.”

My eyes filled.

I blinked. I did not let anything fall.

“Thank you, Misha.” My voice was steady. “For believing in me. For keeping the department open when I was—”

“You do not need to thank me for anything, Serena.” He said it quietly. “You earned this. Nothing else.”

He nodded at Jacques and walked down the corridor.

The office was beautiful.

It was painted a warm pink, there was a large desk, a couch, a private bathroom, and a view of the garden outside. A vase of fresh flowers sat on the corner of the desk and framed print hung on the wall.

Jacques carried in a stack of files, set them on my desk, walked me through the day’s schedule.

at ten. I will be at the desk outside if you need anything.”

“Thank you, Jacques.”

He walked out.

I sat down in the chair behind my desk. I rested my hands flat on the wood. I looked around the office.

My office.

For one long minute, I let myself feel it. The rightness of it. The proof that I had built something of my own, that something in this life was mine, that I was not only Kieran Thawthorne’s wife but also a doctor with a department.

I pulled my phone out.

I scrolled to Jenna’s name.

I need you to add one more person to the invitation list for the celebration.

Jenna: Oh no.

A pause.

Jenna: Serena. If you add Misha to that list and Kieran finds out, he will literally kill me. Literally, Serena.

Me: He will not find out until it is too late. Please, Jenna. Nothing will happen to you. I promise.

Jenna: You are going to be the reason I end up in therapy.

Me: Thank you, Jenna.

I closed her thread, slipped my phone into my drawer, pulled the first patient file toward me, and started working.

The day went fast.

At five-thirty, Jacques knocked on my office door. “Dr. Laskin is here, if you want to see him before you leave.”

“Send him in, please.” I said without lifting my eyes from the files.

Misha walked into the office. He closed the door behind

him. 6/12

“How was the first day?”

“Exhausting.” I smiled. “Thank you.”

“Do you have a minute?”

“Always.”

He sat on the couch across from my desk. We talked for twenty minutes. About the two high-profile cases, about the team, about the schedule for next week. We talked till it was time for me to clock out and we walked outside together to the entrance of the department.

Then I leaned forward.

“Misha. There is a pack celebration in two days at the Alpha house. A partnership announcement. I want you to

come.”

His brows rose. “Serena-”

“I know. I know. Jenna is adding your name to the list.

I am telling you so you are prepared.” I tried to keep my voice as convincing as possible.

His lips stayed unmoving for a second before he slowly shook his head. “Kieran will not be pleased.”

“No. He will not but it doesn’t matter. I can only pull through if you are there.”

Misha studied my face.

“Do you want me there to provoke him?” He asked as if he had read my mind.

I shook my head immediately. “I want you there because you are my friend, Misha. And because I am allowed to have friends at my own pack celebration. And yes, if his face tightens when he sees you across the room, that is a bonus I will not apologize for.”

Misha laughed. “I will come.”

“Thank you.” I said happily.

I was about to say something else when I felt a hand on my waist.

My spine locked.
