The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 118

Chapter 118

Serena

The car ride home was silent.

Kieran drove. His jaw was tight. His hands gripped the steering wheel hard enough that his knuckles were white.

He was angry.

I liked that he was angry.

I pulled my phone out of my bag, opened Misha’s thread, started typing.

I am sorry about this morning. I have not started work yet. Tomorrow, I promise. Things have been complicated.

The reply came almost immediately.

Misha: No problem, Serena. Whenever you are ready. The department is not going anywhere.

A small warmth settled in my chest. Not for him specifically. For the reminder that someone in my life was

still patient with me. Someone who did not hold a

contract over my head.

I looked over at Kieran. He was staring straight ahead. He did not say a word since we got in the car.

Good.

We got home. He walked up the stairs. I followed.

He went into the master bathroom without closing the door. The shower turned on.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

I waited.

I expected him to come out and shout at me. To scold me for what I said to Crowley. To remind me of the contract, of the consequences, of the cell I could go back to if I stepped out of line.

He came out of the bathroom in a towel. He walked to the closet. He pulled out a shirt, pulled it over his head, put on sweatpants.

am going to start work tomorrow,” I said.

He paused. “Okay.” He went back to reading.

He walked out of the bedroom and I sat there blinking at the empty doorway.

That was it?

Okay?

Where was the fight? Where was the anger? Where was the scolding I had earned with my performance at his grandfather’s house?

I followed him downstairs.

He was in the home office, the laptop already open on the desk. He was reading something. His face was calm. His jaw was no longer tight.

“Kieran.”

He did not look up.

“Kieran, I said I am going to start work tomorrow.”

heard you.”

“And?”

“And okay.”

I stared at him.

Okay perhaps he was learning that the fighting would not change anything. I did not want to believe my ears and my eye at first but he was really not concerned about me working.

“How is Sophie doing?”

His fingers stilled on the keyboard.

“Did the new caregiver work out? Is Ethan better? Have you been to see them today?” I asked one after the other

“Serena.” His voice was low. “Stop bringing up Sophie.”

“How can I stop?” I sat down on the chair across from his desk. “Sophie is a part of this marriage, Kieran. She has been a part of it for months. You cannot just tell me to stop bringing her up because you are trying to play the good husband now.”

He stopped typing altogether and gave me a death stare.

“What is your problem?”

I shrugged. “I want to be free.”

His jaw clenched. “Keep dreaming, Serena.”

He turned back to his laptop and kept typing.

I sat there for another thirty seconds.

Then I pulled my phone out of my pocket, opened my messages, typed Jenna’s name.

When you are doing the invitations for the celebration, add Sophie’s name to the list.

A reply came within the minute.

Jenna: Serena, you cannot be serious. Sophie?

Me: Add her name to the list, Jenna.

Jenna: Why?

Me: Please help me with this one thing. I will explain

Later.

A pause. Long. I watched the typing bubble appear and disappear and appear again.

Jenna: Fine. I will add her. But Kieran is going to be furious when he finds out.

Me: Let him be.

I closed Jenna’s thread. I opened Sophie’s. My thumb hovered over the keyboard for a long moment.

Sophie, I want you to know the Alpha house is hosting a pack celebration in a few days. It is a partnership announcement with another pack. Kieran will be there. He would want to see you, I think, even if he will not say it. You should come.

Her reply came fast.

Sophie: I do not know why you are telling me this. How can I trust you, Serena?

I smiled at the screen.

Me: You should. Wear red. It is Kieran’s favorite color.

I stared at the words for a moment before I sent them.

It was only by using Sophie would I be guaranteed a definite freedom from him. When he sees Sophie in her

red dress, all the feelings he had kept hidden from me will burst out in flames.

When the morning came, I got dressed for work. A loose dress, flats, my hair pinned up. I checked my bag, grabbed my keys off the dresser, walked downstairs.

Kieran was in the kitchen, already in a suit. He was drinking coffee from a mug. He looked up when I walked in.

He dropped his coffee and approached me. “I will drop you off,” he said. “And pick you up.”

I quickly shook my head. “I can drive myself.”

“You will not.”

“Kieran-”

“The contract, Serena.” He set the mug down. “You do
