Chapter 133
Serena
Jacques met me at the side entrance with my bag and a bottle of water. He was beaming.
“Dr. Thawthorne. That was incredible.” He said while
clapping.
“Thank you, Jacques.”
“Truly. Dr. Laskin is going to make me do the write-up and I do not even know where to begin.”
“Start with the regression data. The room responded most to that.”
He nodded, still beaming, and walked off to find Misha.
I pushed through the side door into the cool of the early evening.
And there was Kieran.
He was standing at the bottom of the steps with his hands
in his pockets, his jacket on his face turned un toward

the door. When he saw me, he smiled.
I stopped on the second step.
Since the drug incident, he did not come to pick me up once. I left for work on my own. I came home on my own. The contract said he was supposed to drive me, and he abdicated that clause without a word, and I assumed it was guilt, or shame.
But here he was.
Smiling.
I came down the last two steps. “What are you doing here?”
He still had the smile on his face that looked out of place.
“What are you doing here?” I asked as I approached him.
He shrugged lightly like this was the most casual affair ever. “I came to pick you up.”
He stepped forward. Before I could step back, he leaned down and pressed his lips to my forehead. “Come on 13:19

I stared at the side of his head.
Baby?
This was weird even for him. I used to call him by those things but never the other way around. What had gotten into him?
Aina stirred regardless. I felt her the effect of that word in every part of her.
I stepped back.
“I am not done with work yet. I have somewhere to be.”
“I will come with you.”
“There is no need-”
“Serena.” His voice was easy. No anger behind it, no threat. “I am coming.”
Footsteps approached from behind me.
Misha came down the steps. He had his car keys in one hand and his phone in the other. He looked between 13:19

Kieran and me.
“Misha,” I said. “Are you heading home?”
“No. I was going to accompany you to the appointment.”
I glanced at Kieran. I expected the jaw to lock, his eyes to go cold. I expected him to do what he always did when Misha was in his vicinity, the possessive grip, the redirected anger, the attempt to fold me behind him so Misha could not reach me.
He extended his hand.
“Misha.”
Misha looked at the hand. He looked at me before he shook it with a surprised chuckle.
“Kieran.”
Silence.
Then Misha said, carefully to me. “I do not think it’s time you start going alone.”

His eyes moved across me, then they moved to Misha. Professional welcome. Then they moved to Kieran.
His face did not go cold. It went still.
“Dr. Thawthorne.” His voice was careful. “Dr. Laskin.”
“Good evening,” I said. “We have an appointment with Elan.”
“Yes.” He stepped aside for me and Misha.
He did not step aside for Kieran but he stepped through
anyway.
We all walked into the foyer.
“Sir.” The butler’s voice carried ahead of us down the
hallway, warning rather than announcement.
Bertrum appeared in the doorway of the sitting room.
He looked at me. He looked at Misha. He looked at
Kieran.
“Thawthornes are not allowed in this house!”

His voice was loud with anger and hate, burning everything it landed on, my ears and my interest.
I had stood in this foyer before and absorbed his hostility. Last time it was directed at me, at my name, at the marriage I was attached to. This time his eyes were on Kieran, fixed and cold and carrying a specific kind of hate that ran deep.
I turned to Kieran, he didn’t seem to care about Bertrum that much, just staring at him with a neutral expression.
“Bertrum,” he said. His voice was calm and without edge. “I am not here to fight. I came because my wife has a patient in your house and I wanted to make sure she arrived safely.”
“Your kind carries problems everywhere it goes, Thawthorne.”
“I understand you feel that way.”
“I do not feel it. I know it.”
A beat of silence.
