Serena

Elan’s room was on the second floor, quiet and warm, the kind of warm that came from someone deliberately adjusting the heat rather than letting the house decide. I set my bag on the chair beside his bed and ran through the preliminary checks, noting the slight color that had returned to his face since my first visit, the steadier pulse, the marginally improved breathing.

He watched me work without speaking but even the look in his eyes showed that he had things to say.

“You knew,” he said finally after watching for more than ten minutes.

I looked up. “Knew what?”

“About the history between your family and mine.” His voice was level. “And you took the case anyway.”

I continued my notes. “My life doesn’t have anything to do with Kieran or his family. His family are not mine.”

you say so.”

“I am getting a divorce from Kieran.” I said. “His family’s problems or enemies aren’t mine.”

A short laugh escaped him. “That’s a very convenient way to look at it.”

I set my pen down and looked at him squarely. “You think I’m lying.”

“I think you’re a very smart woman,” he said. “Which amounts to the same thing sometimes.”

“If you think I’m lying,” I said, “then why did you accept me as your doctor?”

The corner of his mouth moved. “I wanted to see where it would go.”

I smiled at him. A small, honest smile. “It isn’t going anywhere, Elan. There’s no scheme here. I wanted this job. That’s all.”

He was quiet, watching me return to my work.

to believe that the conversation had neared its end. I focused on my work, making sure there were no mistakes.

However, I still could not stop thinking about the issue between them. Though the drama between them might not necessarily be a secret, seeing as Misha knew about it, but it still was not something available to just anyone.

If I was going to eventually need his help, I need to find out just how deep their hatred for Kieran and his family ran, to be able to weigh how much importance I was going to be in his life.

“Are you truly getting divorced from Kieran?” He suddenly asked, pulling me from my thoughts.

I nodded quickly. “Yes.”

He looked at me strangely, perhaps still not believing it. “Why?”

I gave him a look. “Focus on the treatment.”

He did not argue, only took his gaze back and looked outside the balcony opened doors where the bright moon goured in.

Staring at the moon like this, it was a shame that he did not have his wolf so he could change and run through the woods easily.

I scoffed at myself, even I with my wolf, I could hardly recall the last time I went running.

I finished the session quickly and started repacking my bag. He had finally stopped looking outside and instead, glued his eyes to my body.

“You never answered me.” He said.

I knew what he was talking about but recalling what Kieran had put me through was not something I enjoyed doing. “I answered you.”

“You told me to focus on the treatment.” His voice was patient. “That wasn’t an answer.”

I turned to face him. He had his warm gaze on me, even though there was a ghost of a smile on his face, I could tel that it was only an act to shroud the wickedness and cruelty that laid within.

“Yes,” I said. “I’m getting divorced. As soon as I can but 4/8 there are some hurdles.”

He nodded slowly. “What kind of hurdles?”

“If I told you,” I said, “would you help me sort them?”

His laugh suddenly rang through the air, his head thrown back and his whole body shook with laughter. “Maybe that’s why you came. Maybe the case was never really

about the case.”

“I came because Dr. Laskin brought me and you needed a healer.” I picked up my bag. “You kept asking questions. I gave you answers. That’s not a scheme.”

“But you haven’t really granted me answers, have you?” He pointed out while giving me a knowing look like he was enjoying our conversation.

“He treated me badly,” I said. “Badly enough that I need to divorce him.”

He stilled. “Vague terms again.”

“You can’t know exactly what Kieran did.” I moved toward the door. “You’re my patient. Not my confessor.”

“Fair enough.” He settled back into his chair. “Same timeo

next week?”

“Same time next week.”

The car was warm. Mark drove. Kieran sat beside me with his elbow on the door, his eyes forward, his jaw neither tight nor easy.

We drove go some minutes without even a sentence passing between us and I enjoyed the quiet and the calm. Hearing his voice was going to ruin it for me.

“How did it go?” He broke the beautiful silence.

I exhaled. “Fine.”

A beat of silence.

“Is there anything you needed me to know?” He asked.

I looked at the city moving past the window. “Not really.”

Even though my eyes were pinned ahead, I could feel that he had something going on at the back of his head. But what he had going on was no business of mine.
