Chapter 135

Mark appeared in my office doorway at ten in the morning with an easy expression. But from the instability of that smile he had prepared, I could already guess that this was not going t be enjoyable.
“Alpha.” He lowered his head to a bow.
“Why are you here?” I asked him after he bowed
He pressed his lips into a thin line. “I have something to tell you, Alpha. Your grandfather is requesting your presence, Alpha.”
I closed the file in my hand and sat on the desk while rubbing my jaw.
The summons was not unexpected. I had known, that the news would spread like wildflower and my father would be the very best to find out about said rumors. It was expected that they would call him home.

I drove to the Alpha house.
They were seated when I arrived. My grandfather in his usual chair, his hands folded in his lap, his face carrying a particular blend of disappointment and authority he reserved for moments he considered beneath him. My father stood at the window. My mother sat on the smaller couch with her hands in her lap and her mouth already pressed into the shape of someone preparing for a long evening.
Jenna was not there. Perhaps she had been told to go find her friends seeing as we were about to talk about matters involving the pack.
“Sit down,” my grandfather said the second I walked through the door.
I didn’t sit. It would make things easier and this battle wasn’t really the easiest between my family and I.
“Is it true,” my father said, “that Serena is treating the Cartridge heir?”
:
I looked between them. “Who told you that?”

“Answer the question, Kieran.”
I exhaled. “Yes. She took the case.”
My father pushed off the window. “That woman is going to be the ruin of this family. She has always-”
“Enough.” My mother’s voice cut across his. “Serena is a doctor. She took a patient. That is all.”
“It is not all and you know it-” my father spoke up.
“She will do a good job.” My mother’s voice was steady. “She is good at what she does. Whatever history exists between these families has nothing to do with a doctor treating a patient.”
My grandfather’s eyes did not leave me. “The history is precisely the point.”
“She doesn’t know the history,” I said..
“She will find out.” My grandfather pointed out
“Not from Elan.” I looked at him. “He is not going to tell
her.

My grandfather leaned forward slightly in his chair. “The best thing that could happen right now is for you to end this marriage. Walk away from Serena. Let her take the Cartridge case and go. The further she is from this family,
the less risk she carries.”
My blood cooled.
“The only reason,” my father added, his voice climbing, “that Cartridge agreed to let her treat their son is because she carries your name. She is your wife. They must want to use this as something against us. Why are you not seeing it?”
“Nobody is using her as anything.” My voice was quiet and final. “If the reason you called me here was to insult her and manufacture reasons to end my marriage, don’t bother calling me again.”
My mother looked at me. Her face was tired. Not angry.
I left.
Mark was waiting beside the car. There was never a day I walked out of the alpha house happy. It always ended me me angry or just fed up.

“Alpha. There’s something i need to tell you.”
Hearing that there could be another problem made my heart ache. “What?”
“Your account details were used for a purchase this morning. An apartment. Fifteenth floor of your building.”
I stopped walking. “What do you mean, my account details?”
“The transaction went through at nine-forty. Apartment
1502.”
I stood beside the car and looked at nothing for a moment. Then I got in. The person who had such ability to use my details like that was obviously my wife.
She was using my card but she was getting a knife? What kind of a woman was she?
I was really curious and so I fetched my phone out and gave Serena a call.
“Hello?”

name was still on it.
“Who is this?”
“I’m sorry?” The man’s voice was pleasant and entirely unbothered, which made it worse.
“Why are you answering my wife’s phone?” Anger began pooling inside me
A brief pause. “She’s just stepped away for a moment. Can I take a message?”
“No.” My jaw was iron. “You can tell her that her husband called.”
The man said something away from the receiver and then Serena’s voice came through.
“Kieran.”
“Who was that?” I asked immediately.
“A colleague.”
“Why is your colleague answering your personal phone?”

“I set it down for a moment. It rang. He picked it up. That’s all.” Her explanation did not cover the reason why her colleague would do something so personal.
I breathed out. “The apartment. What are you doing with it with for you buy stuff for it?”
“You’ll find out soon enough.” Her voice was easy, unbothered. “Don’t worry about it.”
“Serena-”
“I have to go. I’ll see you later.”
She hung up.
