I had been pacing since when I came home.

I called her again. Nothing.

I set the phone on the counter and picked it up again. I had texted Trevor, texted Jenna and neither of them knew where she was or who she could be with.

She walked out of this apartment this morning and disappeared into the city with her phone turned off, and the silence troubled my soul.

Maybe I made a mistake giving her the documents so soon? I had only been after transparency, I wanted her to know she could trust me, I understood she was angry and so, but now she was staying out late?

It had been a mistake, at least, giving her so soon was wrong. Maybe I should’ve waited till she started acting right before I gave it to her.

She knew how much room she just been given and she5:16

was about to abuse it.

Cora moved inside my chest, he wanted her here. He wanted her here the moment she left.

The elevator opened, pulling me from my thoughts.

I turned.

Serena walked in and set her bag down by the door. She looked exactly the same as when she left this morning her eyes travelled across the room a wave of frustration clinging to her..

I crossed the floor toward her.

“Where have you been?” I heard the edge in my voice and didn’t try to pull it back. “I’ve been calling you all evening. I’ve been calling you for hours.”

She looked at me with an expressionlessly face.”I was busy.”

“Busy with what?”

“Work.” She stepped around me and started moving

toward the bedroom.

I reached out and caught her arm.”Didn’t you see my calls?”

“I didn’t see them.” She said simply, meeting my gaze.

“That’s a lie.” My jaw set. “You turned your phone off. You didn’t want me to call you.”

“Think whatever you want.” She pulled her arm free. “I

don’t care.”

She turned and kept walking. I moved faster and stepped in front of her.

“Is this how it’s going to be?” My voice came out harder than I intended and I let it. “You do whatever you want, you go wherever you want, you don’t call me, you don’t reply to me, you don’t talk to me and this is just marriage

now?”

With every word, my heart was bleeding. This was not the marriage I was used to. Things used to be so good between us, how did we get here?

“What do you want from me, Kieran?”

“I want you to act like a wife.” The words came out quickly. “I want you to act like you’re in this marriage. Like you love me.”

Her expression didn’t change. “I can’t play a role I don’t feel,” she said.

She stepped around me again.

I watched her walk toward the bedroom. Three steps from the door, she stopped. She turned and looked at me over her shoulder.

“If you still had the agreement,” she said a slow smirk creeping to her lips, “you could hold it over me right now. I know you wish you still had it.”

I looked at her and I hated that she was right. I had been thinking about it.

“I don’t want to hold anything over you,” I said. “I want you here because you want to be here. Not because I have something you need from me.”

“I want to sleep.”

“I have something to say first.”

She turned to face me. Her arms crossed. She waited.

“I know the post was yours.” I kept my voice even. “You sent it because you were angry about what you saw today. I understand that.” I crossed the room toward her. “Sophie called me that morning to pick up Ethan from the hospital. When we were on the way back, Ethan started asking for toys. We went to get them. That’s what the photograph was.” I stopped in front of her. “That’s all it was, Serena. You don’t need to be angry about that.”

I lifted my hands and took her face between them.

She didn’t pull away.

I held her face and looked at her at the expression she wore since she walked through the door and I leaned forward to put my lips to hers.

She turned her face to the side.

“You’re talking too much,” she said. “I don’t care what

you choose to do.”

She walked into the bedroom.

“Serena.”

She kept walking.

“Have you stopped caring?”

She paused at the door, not bothering to turn around.

“I want to sleep,” she said already walking in went in.

I stood there feeling the lack of the passion that used to exist between us. Cora longed for Aina, but I could not feel Aina longing for Cora. She had always been to lazy to

shroud her desires.

What happened now?

There was a time Serena couldn’t sleep if she knew I was angry with her. She would lie beside me and turn over twice and then give up and ask what was wrong. There was a time she left a note on the kitchen counter every morning before she went in early, nothing elaborate, just

where she was going and when she’d be back. She did it when she could’ve texted me but she had thought notes were cuter and she liked them.

She didn’t leave notes anymore.

I walked to the bedroom door and pushed it open.

She sat on the edge of the bed with her shoes still on, her back straight, her eyes somewhere past the wall.

I crossed the room and put my arms around her from

behind.

She went still under my hands but she didn’t lean into me. She didn’t lift her arms either, she just sat there inside the hug with her hands in her lap and her face pointed at the wall.

I held on anyway.

“I want us to go back,” I said. My voice came out low. “To what we were. I know it’s not simple and I know what I’ve done, but I want to go back to it.”

She was quiet for a moment.
