“I said no.”
He crossed his arms. His voice dropped.
“If you don’t go,” he said slowly, “and my grandfather finds out on his own that you were behind that post, and he will find out, one way or another, you will regret it. I need you to understand what I’m saying.”
I looked at him.
The threat sat underneath his words, running through everything he wasn’t saying out loud.
I let out a short laugh. “Is this you being a tattletale? You’re going to run to your grandfather and tell him?” Knowing that he had lost the one thing he used against me, he would hastily reach out to the next one, and he had found it.
“I won’t tell him.”
I shook my head not believing a word from him. “You’re
lying.”
“I’m not—”

“You’re going to tell him,” I said. “You don’t have the
agreement over me anymore, so now you’re going to use your grandfather instead. That’s the new leverage.” I held his eyes. “Fine. I don’t care if Crowley finds out. Go and
tell him.”
His jaw tightened. His eyes changed.
“I care,” he said. “Because if my grandfather finds out, he won’t come after me. He’ll come after your family. He’ll use it to settle every disagreement he ever had with your parents and he will not hold back.” He stepped forward. “I don’t want that. That’s not something I want.”
My heart dropped. I had completely forgotten about the hatred Crowley had towards my family and if something happened, Crowley was without emotions and he would do anything just out. I looked at him.
I didn’t believe him.
But I thought about it.
Crowley Thawthorne never liked me. He made that clear even before our marriage. Kieran had stood up for me

and I loved it like a fool. He tolerated me because Kieran wanted him to. But if he had a reason, a real traceable
reason, he would act on it without hesitation.
My parents had nothing to do with that post.
“Fine,” I said. “I’ll go.”
I went to the bedroom, washed up, and lay down. The room was quiet. I stared at the ceiling and thought about what Crowley was capable of and how much he would enjoy being handed a real reason, and I didn’t sleep for a long time.
In the morning, Kieran sat across from me at the kitchen table. “We should go to the main house this morning,” he
said.
“I have work.”
“It’s better we deal with this now. Before it gets further than it already is.”
I looked at him. Then I looked at the table. Then I rolled my eyes and pushed my chair back.

“Fine.”
The Alpha house was hushed when we arrived. It was so unusually quiet that I thought one way or another they found out it was me.
The first people I saw were Jenna and Bridget. Jenna came straight to me with her hands out and pulled me briefly into a hug. Bridget came beside her and squeezed my arm. Neither of them said much. They separated from Kieran and stayed near me as we moved into the main room, which told me everything about where the lines fell today.
Crowley was already seated. He looked up when we came in. He didn’t look at me the way he looked at Kieran.
He looked at Kieran. “Did you tell her?”
Tell me what?
Kieran turned to face me.
“There’s going to be a press conference,” he said. “My grandfather wants us both there to show the article was a
lie.We address the article publicly and deny any

relationship between me and Sophie.”
I looked at him.
Then I looked at Crowley.
“No,” I said.
Crowley’s chin lifted. He set his hands flat on the arms of his chair.
“You will,” he said. His voice was the voice of a man who had never been told no by anyone in this room and had no intention of starting today. “You will attend that press conference. You will stand beside my grandson and you will show this territory that this family is intact and this marriage is real.” He held my eyes. “That is not a request.”
I looked at him.
I sat with it.
I was the wife. There was a mistress and a child and a photograph on the internet and now I was being asked to stand in front of every camera in this territory and defend

the man who put me in that position. To save his image. To save this family’s image. With my face and my
presence and whatever credibility I still carried as Kieran Thawthorne’s wife.
The anger in my chest was cold and very specific.
