Throughout the night, I stayed awake, just staring at the ceiling. My thoughts circled around her along with the possibility that I would be seeing her today.

When my alarm rang on the bedside table, I turned it off and got dressed for the day.

The hospital was already active when I arrived. I went directly to the department and found the front desk.

A woman looked up when I approached. Her spine straightened and her hands went to the desk.

“Alpha Thawthorne. Can I help you?”

“Is my wife in? Dr. Serena.”

She paused.

“Dr. Serena took a personal day today,” the assistant said. “She won’t be in until tomorrow.”

I froze.

She checked her screen. She paused again.

“Dr. Laskin is also out today.”

I looked at her for one second longer than was comfortable for either of us. Then I turned and walked back down the corridor.

This confirmed my suspicion. She had been with Misha all along. Why else would the two of them take days off the same day?

Misha was an animal, taking another man’s wife into his home. He had no shame, no sense of self, nothing. He was an embarrassment.

I should go to his house and remind him to whom she was married to and that baby was not his.

My phone suddenly rang in my pocket.

The name on the screen was Mark. “What,” I said.

“Sir.” Mark’s voice came out lower than usual, with a pause before each sentence. “I apologize – I should have escalated this earlier and I didn’t. There is a gala tomorrow evening. An invitation arrived a few days ago. It was filed with your formal correspondence and I didn’t flag it in time.”

hfrowned slightly. “What gala?”

I closed my eyes.

“Also,” Mark said, “your grandfather has been trying to reach you since this morning.”

I massaged the bridge of my nose, already fed up. “I’ll be there,” I said.

I walked through the door only to find my grandfather sipping from his cup. On the other chair, my father was casually reading a news paper. There were no yelling, no fighting, it seemed to be a very good day.

“Oh Kieran, you’re here.” My grandfather exclaimed with joy when I walked in. “Did you receive your invitation? To Mrs Archer’s gala?”

“I received it.”

“And I am sure that Serena is aware.” He gave me a strange

look.

I nodded my head. “I was going to tell her.”

“Mrs Archer helped keep this pack when we needed it years ago before you were born.” My grandfather said. “She is the reason we hold the eastern territories, She is respected across every allied pack in this region and she has asked, personally, by game, for your wife.” He set his tea cup down. “Where is 15:48

“That’s not true,” Jenna’s voice came from upstairs. I lifted my eyes and saw her climbing down the staircase, eyes fixated on me in a glare.

I tightened my fist, glaring at her. But all she did was flip her hair and walked towards where father was.

“Jenna-”

“Serena is not at work.” Her voice was clear. “She took a

personal day. She wasn’t at her parents’ house last night. She wasn’t at Trevor’s. None of her friends have seen her.” She looked at our grandfather. “She left the apartment last night with a bag and no one knows where she is.”

The room went quiet. All eyes were fixed on me and in my grandfather’s eyes never moved from me.

I took one step toward Jenna.

“Enough,” I said. My voice came out low and tight. I wanted to finish the step,

I wanted to fix things my own way but my family keep involving themselves in what has nothing to do with them.

My grandfather looked from her to me. “You lied to me,” said, shaking his head in disappointment.
