Sophie stood with Fiona from the Bluemoon pack at her
shoulder, the two of them stood tall with their chins up, and Sophie’s eyes didn’t move from Kieran’s face.
The crowd nearest to us shifted. I watched their heads
turn, gazes moving from Sophie to Kieran to me, and the
conversations nearest to us died mid–sentence.
A woman to my left said to her companion, “Why is she calling him like that? Who is she?”
Someone else: “Isn’t that the Thawthorne luna?”
A man I didn’t know turned to me directly. “Isn’t that your
husband she’s calling for?”
I turned to Kieran.
He stood beside me with his eyes moving through the room,
counting. He was not wearing a face of someone caught in an act, rather stood still staring at Sophie forgetting everyone else in the room.

“Why,” I said, “is that woman calling your name like that?” I asked joining the crowd in their confusion as to why his first name was being used so casually when he was the alpha of the strongest and most successful pack.
He scanned the crowd. He squared his shoulders and spoke at a volume designed to carry.
“Sophie and I grew up together,” he said. “That’s all there is to
it.”
Fiona’s voice came from behind Sophie.
“Interesting.” Her mouth curved, her eyes staying flat above it. “Kieran Thawthorne is calling what they have a childhood friendship. How modest of him.”
Andrew laughed from beside me, once, with nothing warm in
“Fiona.” He turned to look at her. “What is it that drives you to
speak in rooms where no one has asked?”
Fiona’s chin came up. “I have every right to speak here. I am
a Maguirre.”

“You are a Maguirre,” Andrew said. “But who exactly would
refer to you as such?”
Fiona’s neck went red and her mouth pressed flat. Andrew was always ready to call her out and remind her of the fact
that she was an illegitimate child. But it was this illegitimate
child that Sophie must’ve used to gain an invitation to this
party.
Regardless of whether she was legitimate or not, it really had nothing to do with me. Being free from Kieran’s grip meant that I could easily walk away.
I turned around while they were all caught up in their
conversation.
I moved with my eyes forward and pushed through the side
door and came out into the evening air on the steps beside
the estate wall.
The quiet settled around me. I pressed the backs of my
hands against my face and exhaled. The air passed through my lungs and produced a calm that I have been searching
for months.

Behind me, I could hear his hurried footsteps but the last thing I intended to do was grant him even a minute of my day. I walked down the steps and along the path.
“Serena. Stop.”
No matter how fast I walked or where I ran to, he would find
he would surely show up there and cause a scene and that is
exactly what Bertram hated. Me staying with them had not
been what he wanted. The last thing I wanted to do was give
him a reason not to trust me.
I turned.
He was three steps behind me with his jaw set and his brow pulled down, both hands at his sides.
“Why are you disturbing me?” I asked.
“I’m your husband,” he said. “I’m the father of your baby. You don’t get to-”
“You are not the father of my baby.” I cut him off. “You have a 4/8

name across a room full of guests. Go back in there and
answer her.”
“Stop performing, Serena.” He said with frustration.
“I beg your pardon?”
“I know you went through my laptop.” He said it without raising his voice. “I want to know what you found.”
My hands stopped moving.
He didn’t come after me because he was worried. He came
after me because he wanted an answer.
I looked at him for a long moment. Then I nodded. I couldn’t tell exactly what had been going through my head hearing. him call my name and walking behind me, but the last thing i had thought was that he was coming after me because he
wanted to know what I found.
I reached into my bag and pulled out my phone and sent a

wrist.
“Why did you leave?” His voice dropped. “You packed a bag and left and you’ve been in another man’s house. I need to know why.”
A cold wind danced through the air. I looked up to the sky only to find the stars gone and on my face landed a droplet
of rain.
“I don’t want this marriage,” I said. “I haven’t wanted it for
