Chapter 158
Kieran
I stood in the rain and watched the car take her.
The taillights turned the corner and the road went dark and
the rain came down on the path and the estate wall and I
stood in all of it with my jacket soaked through and Cora
pressed his full weight against the inside of my chest and
made no sound at all.
Behind me, I heard a car start and in no time, a car was
parked in front of me.
“Alpha!” Mark called as he alighted from the car. “It’s freezing.”
Serena had made a fool out of me tonight. Everyone almost
believed i had no idea where my wife was only for her to
show up in such a beautiful dress.
I still could not believe that she had spent so long at his
house. What kind of a friendship had blossomed between
them?

“Sir.” Mark suddenly interrupted the train of my thoughts.
I looked up, Mark kept his eyes on the road, both hands on the wheel. I could hardly see the expression he was wearing. “I remember you told me to look into Sophie but everything I found proved to be a bit too simple. And so I did some more digging.”
I say ip straight suddenly very interested in the set up.
“Benjamin had died at the ski resort.” He kept his voice low,
one sentence at a time. “The official report had said it was
a minor working.” He paused. “Sophie was at that resort the
same week.”
I didn’t speak for a long time.
Benjamin and I weren’t close. He was the mistake my father
tried to keep buried, one my mother had always held against
him. And though she rarely does that, she always reminded
him of his mistake.
What was Sophie doing at the scene of the crime? If she had been there when he died, it meant there might be a simple
connection between them, perhaps a simple coincidence.

“Do you think she was involved?” I asked feeling the negative
drama.
Mark was quiet for a moment. “I can’t say yet. I don’t have
enough to make that call.” He kept his eyes forward. “But
the overlap is there and it doesn’t sit right with me. I’ll keep digging.”
“Don’t say anything to anyone,” I said. “Everything you can
find.”
Mark nodded once.
The car moved through the rain and I sat in the back and
turned it over: the woman I spent years protecting, the
woman I chose over my own marriage.
She was there when Benjamin fell.
Did she do anything to suspect her?
She took a personal day. IShe couldn’t take personal days
forever. When she came back, I’d be there.
I was at the hospital at the crack of dawn.

The department was already open. Serena’s assistant came to the door with the answer already on her face.
“Hello, I’m here to see Dr. Thawthorne.” I said politely.
“Dr. Thawthorne hasn’t come in yet.”
The words of the assistant meant that she hadn’t taken the day off but rather she wasn’t in yet. I found a chair near the entrance and sat in it and waited.
I was willing to wait for however long. Whenever she decided to come to work, she was going to meet me here. I needed her to know Elan was a piece of shit and she should not go back to him.
My phone rang a while later, I quickly I stepped outside to
take it.
“Mark what is it? Do you have any additions to what you told me last night?”
“There hasn’t really been yet,” Mark said. “Sophie’s trail is clean. If she was involved, she covered it. It seemed she would are a good person.”

“She covered it,” I said. “That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to
find. Keep looking.”
“Yes, sir.”
I hung up.
If Mark had been at this long and found nothing, whatever Sophie was hiding, she’d buried it with care. The only way I
was going to get the truth was to hear it from her directly.
That thought was still moving through my head when I turned
back toward the entrance and saw Serena.
She came from the eastern corridor, not from the car park or
the main doors. She came from inside the building. I read the junction signage from where I stood.
MATERNITY SERVICES. FLOOR 2.
My feet stopped.
She took a personal day the other day was this the reason
why? Did she take some time off to come for a checkup on the baby? Was there something wrong with my baby?
She saw me at the same moment. Her chin came up and her 5/7

stride didn’t break. But on her face was a smart hatred she
felt when looking at me.
“What do you want?” she asked.
Her voice was cold but at least she was a king me a question.
