Kieran never returned home for hours and I was not in the mood to wait around. I had waited for so many months while he went around telling the whole world that I was just the owner of the title, and I was nothing to him.

I arrived to my parents place and was immediately welcomed and happy. My parents’ house was warm and the whole place smelled like garlic bread. She wrapped her hand over my shoulder and led me straight to the kitchen where the pot was shimmering hot with pasta sauce.

“Your father is trying something new.” She said as she happily

showed me around.

The house seemed like it was more of a hotel than a house. They handled everything with fear perhaps fearing that they would be told to move at soon as possible.

They were not ready to be in debt more than anything. Kieran had showed them what exactly it meant to be comfortable and what thy would be losing after.

After eating, we sat down for a while in total silence and I knew they were waiting for an explanation now and I told them everything. From where he had forced me and Aina to stay ǹ

before.

“Don’t worry,” my mother said, her eyes filled with tears but her hands went up and down my baby’s girl. “This time it you get the divorce and you come home.”

I sat down and let her pour tea.

“I think Kieran is trying to find out who the father of my baby is,” I said.

My father sat down across from me. My mother set the kettle on

the counter.

“He was at the maternity ward,” I said. “He must’ve asked about my doctor. He knows what floor I was on.” I looked at the table. “I don’t know what to do. I don’t want him to find out.”

A knock at the front door before my mom could say anything.

He went to answer it. I heard the door open and then a pause and then my father’s voice, quiet and angry: “What do you want?”

And Kieran’s voice: “Frederick, please, I need to speak to

Serena.”

I stood before my mother could say anything. I knew the man, if hy game here knowing I was here.

“Leave it, Dad.” I walked to the door. My father stepped back. I looked at Kieran standing on the step with his jaw set and his hands at his sides. “What?”

He looked at me for exactly one second.

“Why did you hurt Sophie?” he asked.

I blinked rapidly. Out of all the sudden questions he could ask, that was the last I expected.

“She deserved it,” I said. “That’s why I did it.”

“Serena.” He dropped into a soft tone. The alpha voice, the one built to sound reasonable without actually being it. “I understand you’re angry. I understand this situation has pushed you somewhere you don’t want to be. But I married you expecting you to hold yourself together. Not to go around putting people in hospitals while you’re carrying a child.”

I looked at him.

I could hardly believe he was saying such words to me. Did he hear from the two of us and decided on who to believe? Instead of correcting his group and making then hated. I almost I then realized that this would b

“I couldn’t come home. Our conversation couldn’t happen. All of

it, Serena.” His eyes stayed on mine. “This is your fault.”

My hand moved across the face.

The sound was very sharp in the evening air.

Kieran went absolutely still.

I stood in the doorway with my hand at my side and my chin level.

“Go back to Sophie,” I said. “And if I see her near me again, I will do far more than what she’s already showing you.”

I turned and walked back into the house and closed the door.

Kieran

I stood on the step.

The door was shut. My face stung. The evening was quiet around me and Cora sat in my chest without pressing in any direction, as if he too was waiting to understand what had just happened.

I walked back to my car.

Trevor’s bar was half-full when I came through the door, low 49ise filling the space without doing much for it. Trev

behind the bar and he looked up when I walked in and then looked again.

“Sit down,” he said.

I sat at the bar.

He poured without being asked and pushed the glass across. I picked it up.

“Serena put Sophie in the hospital,” I said

Trevor set the bottle down. He looked at me.

“Say that again.”
