< Chapter 42
The most important thing right now was getting away from him. That was it. That was the only thought I had room for. Everything else and he could act like this was not what it obviously was for all I cared. It was his delusion and not mine.
I just needed to not be near him.
The doctors discharged me a few hours later. There were no broken bones just bruises and scratches and a body that was more tired than injured. and my father convinced them to let him take me home.
“I’m taking my daughter home,” he said to the room and luckily, nobody argued.
We walked outside into the parking lot. The evening air was warm and my father pulled his phone out and started booking an Uber. He squinted at the screen and tapped at it with one finger. He was impatient, just wanted the time to dance through in a speed of light.
Kieran showed up beside us.
“Let me drop you at the house,” he offered.

Kieran stood there for a second. Then he walked over to
I was standing with my mother a few feet away. She had her arm looped through mine and her body angled toward me like a wall between me and everything else.
“It’s hot out here,” Kieran said. “If you don’t want to see my face, I’ll have the driver take you. You won’t have to
sit near me.”
I didn’t look at him. I kept my eyes on the road ahead and
waited for the car.
His voice came again, softer this time. He said my mother’s name. “Please. Let me at least get you home safely.”
My mother didn’t respond. She tightened her grip on my arm and said nothing.
Jenna’s voice came from behind us. I turned and saw her standing with Trevor and Bridget near the hospital entrance.

“Trevor can take them,” Jenna called out.
At that same moment, the Uber pulled up to the curb.
My father pocketed his phone. Goodbyes were exchanged around me but I didn’t participate. I didn’t speak nor did I look at Kieran. I walked to the car and got in and
hut the door and watched the hospital shrink in the rear window until it disappeared.

“They say boys take after their mothers.” She was standing near the entrance with her arms crossed. “I think that’s a lie. You are nothing like me. You are a disappointment.”

Trevor appeared at my side and steered me toward the car. He started the engine and pulled out of the lot.
We drove in silence for a full minute before he opened his mouth.
“Want to go back and grab Sophie’s tampons?”
I shot him a look that should have set him on fire.
He laughed. “Relax. I’m sure she survived without them. Probably’t bleed all over the place.”

Serena called her parents to come get her. She sat in a hospital bed and chose her father over me. If only she was more open to listening to me and actually believing what I said, then we wouldn’t be facing all of this.
Her parents loved her in a way that left no room for compromise. They would burn the world down for that girband they wouldn’t ask for permission first. Serena 1:32 would definitely tell them everything. Which was not the

I rubbed my forehead and leaned back against the headrest.

My mother started tidying the moment we walked through the door. She started cleaning the house, I couldn’t tell why she was suddenly doing such a thing except she wanted me to be very comfortable.
I joined her. My body ached from the fall and the bruises throbbed with every move but I picked up a cloth and wiped the table beside her. We worked in silence, shoulder to shoulder.
When dinner came, I stood at the stove with her and peeled garlic and chopped onions and stirred the pot when she told me to. My father set the table. We ate together and nobody mentioned Kieran’s name.
After the plates were cleared and my father settled into his chair with a book, I sat down across from my parents.
