“I’ll get it back,” I said into her shoulder. “I promise. I’ll work hard and I’ll buy the jewelry back. I swear I will.”

My father’s voice came from across the table. “Focus on selling it first. The rest can wait.”

We held each other for a long time after that.

When I finally pulled away, I went upstairs to the room they had set up for me. I washed my face in the bathroom and stared at my reflection until my eyes stopped looking

so red.

I couldn’t sleep just yet and recalled there was trash in the kitchen that needed to be brought out. So I went to the kitchen and brought out the trash..

I stepped off the porch and then my eyes fell on a bag that was sitting on the ground near the front steps.

I looked around. The street was empty. No car, no footsteps, no one in sight.

I picked up the bag and opened it. There were boks with

notes stuffed between the pages and a name written on

the inside cover in messy handwriting.

Josh.

My brother.

I looked around again but the street was still empty. He was already gone.

I took the bag inside and ran to the bottom of the stairs.

“Mom! Dad!”

They rushed down. My father still had his reading glasses on and my mother was gripping the railing.

I held up the bag. “Josh was here. He must have heard our conversation.”

My mother’s face went pale. She grabbed the back of the chair beside her.

“That boy is stubborn,” she said. Her voice was shaking. “If he heard what we said, he’ll do something stupid. I know he will.”

Jenna and Trevor sat across from me in the living room.

They had been going back and forth for the past hour about how asking Serena for money was insane. I let

them talk. I poured my drink and let them say what they needed to say because at the end of the day, my decision. was my decision.

Trevor leaned forward. “She’s not going to forgive you.”

“She’ll forgive me when she’s ready.” I took a sip. “She’ll throw her tantrum first. Then she’ll come around.”

I thought about the other night. She came on to me and kissed me first. She pulled me closer when she could have pushed me away. A woman who wanted a divorce didn’t do that. She still loved me. She still wanted me.

There was no denying that.

A knock came from the front door.

Jenna got up to answer it. She pulled the door open and stopped.

The person standing there was a teenager. Slim, tall, 376

lanky. He had the same eyes as Serena. The same jawline. The same stubborn set to his mouth.

“Josh?” Jenna’s face lit up. “Did you come alone?”

“Yes.” He replied coldly.

He walked past her into the living room. His eyes found me immediately. He walked straight to the table, picked up the glass of wine I had been drinking, and threw it in my face.

The wine hit me across the eyes and nose and ran down my chin onto my shirt. Before I could react, his fist was already swinging toward my jaw.

Trevor was fast and quickly caught him. He grabbed Josh around the waist and pulled him back. “Calm down. Calm down!”

Josh fought against Trevor’s grip. His eyes were

bloodshot and his whole body was shaking with rage. He looked like he wanted to tear me apart with his bare

hands.

it on the table.

Josh was still struggling. Trevor had both arms locked around him but Josh was screaming.

“She loved you!” His voice cracked. “My sister loved you so much and you cheated on her! You’re an animal!”

I stood up and walked toward him.
