Chapter 59
Serena
Kieran’s words echoed in my head over and over again.
Move into the house. Act like a proper wife.
I did not want to go back to him. I did not want to step through that front door and pretend that our marriage was something worth saving. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him on his knees in that lobby with Sophie in his arms, and my stomach turned.
The only way I could be free of him was the divorce. However, Gabriel had not called. The last time we spoke, he assured me the jewelry would sell and I should not worry, but that was days ago and my phone stayed silent.
I was unemployed. If the jewelry did not sell, I would have nothing, and having nothing meant depending on the man I was trying to leave.
I sat on the edge of my bed and stared at my hands in my lap and tried to think of a way out that did not lead back to Kieran, but nothing came to me.

“Serena! Come down for lunch.” I heard my mother call
I washed my face, pushed my hair back, and went downstairs. She set the table for two; my father was at
work and Josh was at school.
I sat down and picked up my spoon.
My phone beeped once, then it beeped again.
I glanced at the screen and saw two credit alerts.
My spoon stopped halfway to my mouth.
I tapped the notification and the numbers filled my screen; it was the money from the sale of the jewelry.
Gabriel did it.
The full amount sat in my account, every cent I needed to pay Kieran and walk away.
“Mom.” My voice barely came out.
She looked up from her plate. “What is it?”

I turned the phone toward her.
Her eyes moved across the screen and her hand flew to her mouth. She stood up so fast her chair scraped against the floor. “Is this real?”
“It’s real.” I said nodding my head furiously.
“Oh my goodness! Serena!” She screamed.
She grabbed my hands and pulled me to my feet and we jumped together in the middle of the kitchen. She laughed and I laughed and then the laughter broke apart in my chest and turned into something else.
I pressed my face against her shoulder and suddenly, tears began to fall from my eyes.
The money was here and it means th divorce would be possible.
My knees buckled and she held me tighter; my body
shook with the sobs that broke out of me.
After what he had said that night, I honestly lost all hope gf being able to sell the jewelry and getting my freedom:45

But there was hope. I would be free!
“It’s okay,” she whispered. “It’s okay, my girl.”
When the tears slowed, I pulled back and wiped my face.
“What now?” my mother asked.
“First, I have to thank Misha.” I pressed my palm against my chest; my heart was still pounding. “He is the one who made this happen.”
My mother nodded. “You should.” She smiled at me.
I picked up my phone and called him.
He picked up on the second ring. “Serena.” His voice was warm. “How are you?”
“The jewelry sold.” I could barely keep my voice steady. “Thank you, Misha. I don’t know how to repay you for this.”
“You don’t have to repay me for anything.” He chuckled. “I’m glad it worked out.”

you to a restaurant, it’s the least I can do.”
“I would like that,” he said. Then he paused. “Serena, have you found another job?”
I blinked. “No. Not yet.”
“I have an offer for you.” He cleared his throat. “My hospital has an open position in your specialty. I need an answer soon because the spot won’t stay open for long.”
My grip tightened on the phone. “I need to think about it.”
“Of course. I’ll be waiting for your response. See you tonight.”
I ended the call and turned to my mother.
“He offered me a job,” I said. “At his hospital. In my specialty.”
My mother’s eyes went wide. “What do you want to do?”
I pressed my lips together. “It’s a good offer.”

“Then take it.” She urged, smiling.

“I know I should.” I sat back down at the table. “I just
don’t know if I should take it here.”
My mother went quiet. Taking a job in this city meant staying within Kieran’s reach, within his grandfather’s reach, within the territory of a pack that could crush me whenever they wanted.
“Let me go get ready for the dinner.”
She nodded and I went upstairs. I showered and put on a simple dress, dried my hair, and checked my reflection
once.
The restaurant was quiet when I arrived. Misha sat at a table near the window; he stood when he saw me and pulled out my chair.
I sat down and the words came out before the waiter
could bring the menu.
“Thank you.” I said it with everything I had. “You don’t know what you did for me. That jewelry was the only thing between me and my freedom, and you helped me
sell it.”

He smiled. “You did the hard part. I just made a phone
call.”

We ordered and the food came and we talked easily.
Then he set his fork down. “Have you made your decision about the job?”
I took a breath. “I have. But I wanted to ask you something first.” I met his eyes. “Is there a possibility that I could take the position in another city? Not here.”
He looked at me for a moment; his face did not change.
“All you need to do is tell me that you agree,” he said. “I can place you at a hospital in another country if that’s what you want.”
Another country. My chest opened up; something tight behind my ribs gave way. A new city, a new hospital, a place where nobody knew my name or my marriage.
“I agree,” I said.
