Chapter 58
Serena
I lay on my bed with a textbook against my knees and a highlighter between my teeth.
My phone vibrated on the nightstand. I reached for it and checked the screen.
A message from Kieran. “Come outside or I walk into the house and we talk in front of your parents”
My jaw tightened because I knew he would do it. He would walk through that front door without knocking, sit himself down at my parents’ kitchen table, and say whatever he wanted while my mother and father watched.
I put the textbook aside, slipped on my shoes, and went downstairs. My mother looked up from her seat but I gave her a quick smile and told her I needed air.
The evening was cool. His black car sat at the side of the road; the engine was still running. I crossed the street, opened the passenger door, and got in.

“What do you want?” I asked.
His hands sat on the steering wheel; his jaw was set. “Why did you harass Sophie?”
He would not accept the truth no matter how I said it.
“If you divorce me,” I said, “I won’t disturb Sophie again.”
His head turned. “You don’t really want a divorce.” He said it with certainty. “Why do you keep asking for one?”
Aina stirred inside me. I ignored her.
“I understand that you’re angry,” he continued. “I understand this is a tantrum. But it’s getting too much and I am done entertaining it.”
“This is not a tantrum.” I kept my eyes on the windshield. “I want a divorce.”
“You’re not getting a divorce.” He turned back to face the road. “And you need to stay away from Sophie.”
My head spun. The same words, the same refusal, the same wall.

“I will stay away from Sophie,” I said slowly, “if you grant me the divorce.”
His lips did not move for a while, just staring out the windshield.
“I’m leaving on a business trip for a week.” His tone shifted. “When I come back, I want to see that you’ve moved into the house and that you’re acting like a proper wife.”
“No.” The word left my mouth before he finished his
sentence.
“I cannot be the one who loses something for this marriage.” My chest was tight; my fingers curled into fists. on my lap. “You are the one who did wrong. You should stop seeing Sophie.”
“You have to do this because you are my wife.” He looked at me. “You are Mrs. Thawthorne.”
“I don’t want to be your wife anymore.” I said in almost a yell, though my voice was shaky. “I want to leave. Grant me the divorce.”

I stared at him.
“There is no way you can sell that jewelry in this city.” He said each word slowly and calmly. “I own this place. Not just my pack territory but so many places beyond it. You cannot sell your jewelry without my approval.”
He had the power and the reach and the connections to block me at every turn, and hearing him say it out loud, hearing him throw it in my face with that unbothered voice, something hot and violent surged through my
chest.
I lunged at him.
My fists connected with his chest, one after the other. “You bastard!” I hit him again and again; my knuckles ached against the hard wall of his body. “You selfish, heartless bastard!”
He grabbed both my wrists and held them still. “Calm down.”
“I will not calm down until you grant me the divorce!” My throat scratched with the need to cry.

“That is not going to happen.”
I tried to rip my hands free but his grip did not give. My arms burned from the effort; my breath came in sharp, ragged gasps.
I lowered my head and sank my teeth into his shoulder.
He did not flinch. He sat there with my teeth in his flesh and his hands around my wrists and he did not make a single sound.
I pulled my teeth back. The fabric of his shirt was damp where my mouth had been.
“You will not get a divorce,” he said; his voice was low and even. “I told you before. A divorce is not something you can ever get from me.”
I yanked my hands free and shoved the car door open. The night air hit my face as I stepped out.
I turned back and looked at him one last time.
“I regret marrying you.”

I watched her cross the street and disappear into her parents’ house.
My shoulder ached where she bit me but the pain was nothing compared to the shrinking in my chest. I did not know why it sat there or what to do with it.
But the word divorce echoed in my skull, and the words I regret marrying you dug in right behind it; each time they circled back they cut a little deeper.
I started the car and drove.
Trevor’s bar was packed when I walked through the door. Music poured from the speakers; bodies filled the booths and lined the counter. Trevor moved through the crowd, shook hands, clapped shoulders, greeted his regulars with
an easy grin.
He spotted me and the grin dropped as he walked towards me.
“Hello my friend.” he smiled as he wrapped his hands around me in a brief hug.

“I need to talk to you.” I said.
He did not ask for what reason, instead, he led me straight to the private room.
The door closed behind us and the noise dulled to a low
hum.
Trevor sat across from me and poured two glasses. He pushed one toward me.
