The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 61

Chapter 61

Serena

I slid the ring off my finger and placed it in Sophie’s palm.

Her fingers closed around it instantly.

My eyes trailed after her clasped hand. “I’ll call the contractor but you should be smart about this. Make sure nobody from Kieran’s family finds out.”

Sophie nodded. “I understand.”

I walked out the front door, down the porch steps, across the driveway, and got into my car. I turned the key, pulled out of the street, and drove home.

My parents were not downstairs when I walked in. I went straight up to my room, set my bag on the floor, and sat down on the chair by the window.

I stared into nothing.

Tears trickled down my face a few minutes later before I could stop them. My hand moved to my stoma h and :46

I gave him away. I gave my husband to another woman and I handed her my ring and the house I turned into a ‘home.

What was the alternative? Stay and keep fighting for a man who told his own family he never wanted to marry

me?

Stay and watch him do the things he never did for me for

another woman?

Stay and let my child grow up watching that?

Even when Sophie came back, I thought I could hold on. The moments of weakness, the times I kissed him back, the nights I let him into my body; all of it was hope in disguise. I wanted my husband. I wanted to save my marriage.

But saving a marriage was not supposed to be one person’s job. It was his job too, but he left it all to me while he ran to her.

Our marriage was not sacred to him. Sophie was sacred to him. Their son was sacred to him.

As for me, all I had left was my baby.

‘I would never tell him about this child. If there was

anything good that came out of this marriage, it was my baby, and because of that, I would never regret living through this.

I moved from the chair to the bed and wrapped my arms around the pillow. The bed was small but it felt too wide.

I was not used to sleeping alone; there was usually a hard, tall frame next to me, his arm heavy over my waist, his chest warm against my back.

How was I supposed to get used to being alone now?

How was I supposed to stop reaching for him in the dark?

I was in love with him and that was the cruelest part of all of this because he did not want it.

I had to carry that love with me and spare him the burden of it.

My eyes closed and sleep took me before I knew it.

My phone vibrated and the sound pulled me awake. The

room was bright; sunlight poured through the curtains

and I blinked repeatedly before I reached for it.

“Serena!” Jenna’s voice was loud. “Did you call a renovator to renovate your house?”

I sat up fast; my heart jumped into my throat.

“Who told you?” I asked.

“I was passing by and saw the vans. The contractor said you hired him.”

For a second, I thought Sophie ran to Kieran’s family to brag. But Jenna only heard it from the contractor, so Sophie kept her mouth shut.

I exhaled. “Yes, I called the contractor. Don’t worry about

it.”

“But why are you renovating? What’s going on?”

“I just wanted a change.” I took a breath and kept my voice light. “It’s nothing serious, Jenna.”

she did not sound convinced but she let it go.

‘My phone rang and I answered it.

“I was passing by your house with Jenna and there are vans everywhere.” Trevor sounded cautious. “The contractor said Serena hired him. What’s going on?”

“She probably just wants to change things.” I leaned back in my chair. “She wants to live there more freely.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Trevor went quiet for a moment, then said okay, and the

call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Since I left, she had not called me. I was used to the silence of her voice by now but I was not used to the silence of the notifications. Before all of this, she sent messages constantly; if she did not call, she texted.

Good morning. Have you eaten. When are you coming:47 home. Small things that filled my screen every day.

Now there was nothing.

‘A low, tight knot sat behind my ribs.

I called her.

She answered on the second ring and the knot loosened.

“Why are you renovating the house?” I asked.

She did not answer the question. “I know your study has

a lot of valuables in it. I haven’t touched them.”

Hearing her voice through the phone again settled something inside me that was restless for days.

“Take a break from work,” I said. “And don’t bother going to see my grandfather. When I come back, I’ll address everything myself.”

“There’s no need.” Her voice was flat. “I don’t want the job anymore.”

I smiled. “Yes, that’s good. You don’t have to be working. I’ll give you money.”

“When you come back,” she said, “we’ll talk.”

‘She did not refuse the money and she did not accept it

either.

“Is there anything else?” she asked. “I want to hang up now and join my mom.”

“Okay,” I said.

The call ended.

She sounded calm, not angry, not bitter, not sharp.

That was a good sign.

Serena

I put the phone down and picked up my bag.

The airport terminal was busy around me; people moved in every direction with their suitcases. I told my parents not to come because I did not want anybody to be suspicious, and so I stood here alone, minutes away from a plane that would take me out of the country.
