Trevor drove me home.
The front door opened and a pair of gold house slippers sat at the entrance with embroidered trim. Sophie’s choice, not mine, not Serena’s.
I stepped over them and walked inside.
Trevor followed me in and stopped in the middle of the living room. His eyes swept the walls, the furniture, the gold on every surface.
“This style is an assault on the eyes.” He turned in a slow circle. “Sophie has the taste of a woman who decorated a hotel lobby with her eyes closed. She cannot in any way compare to Serena’s style.”
I walked past him toward the hallway. “Don’t tell Jenna that Serena left the country.”
Trevor let out a short laugh. “You really believe you can hide this from Jenna?” He leaned against the wa”. “Ever2

secrets the way you sniff out blood.”
‘I walked into the bedroom, stripped off my clothes, and stood under the shower until the water ran cold. I dried off and went to the study.
After hanging around for a while, Trevor left for his place.
I placed three things on the desk.
The bank card. The ring. The divorce documents.
These were all Serena left behind. Everything she owned, everything she touched, everything that carried her scent or her warmth was gone. Not a single trace of her remained in this house; the walls were bare of her and the rooms were empty of her and the air held nothing of her scent that used to greet me at the door.
The loneliness was a hole in my chest; it widened with every breath.
I pressed my thumb and forefinger against the bridge of my nose; a headache building behind my left eye.
My phone rang on the desk and I glanced at the screen:52

Mark.
“Alpha,” he said. “Mrs. Thawthorne left the country the day before you arrived. She is working in a hospital that belongs to the Silvercrest pack.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
Silvercrest.
“Who got her that job?” I asked.
“Misha Silvercrest.”
Misha.
The Alpha who ran the healing clinics, the one who must’ve helped her sell the jewelry behind my back.
Every door I shut, Misha opened a window.
“I’ll send you her residential address shortly,” Mark said.
The call ended and I picked up the divorce documents. I read through them page by page, every clause, every sondition.

A slight smile curved on my face.
“You cannot leave me,” I said to the empty room. “Divorce is not an option.”
Cora was excited. With Serena gone, it had been unable to get even a tinge of excitement. The thread of the bond was thin but it pulsed, faint and far away.
I went back to the bedroom and closed my eyes. I could finally sleep knowing that in a matter of hours, she would be back here beside me and we could go back to how we
used to be.
In the morning, I went straight to the office. Mark came in with a stack of documents and set them on my desk.
“Your family is expecting you this evening,” he said.
“I need you to book a flight to the country Serena is right
now.”
Mark nodded and walked out.
My phone buzzed with a message. I checked it and it was Sophie asking to meet for lunch. She sent me an address 33
it was close to my office.

The restaurant was quiet when I arrived. Sophie sat at a table near the back; her hands wrapped around a glass
‘ of water. She stood when she saw me and then sat back
down.
I took the seat across from her.
“I’m sorry,” she said instantly she saw me settled. “For moving into your house. Serena told me to do it and I only did what she asked.” She pressed her fingers together. “I didn’t expect things to turn out this way. I didn’t want her to actually divorce you.”
I looked at her.
“If there is anything I can do to help,” she continued, “please tell me.”
“Stay away from my wife.” I kept my voice level. “If you want to help, that is the only thing I need from you.”
Sophie nodded frantically. “I promise. I won’t go near her.”
“When I have the time,” I said, “I’ll arrange to transfer Ethan to a different school.”

There was nothing left to talk about anymore so I stood up and left the restaurant.
After work, I drove to the family estate.
My mom met me at the door; her eyes moved past me and scanned the empty driveway.
“Where is Serena?” she asked.
“She left the country for a break.” I said it casually because that was what this was. A break. I would go there and I would bring her back.
Mother’s face did not relax but she stepped aside to let
me in.
Grandfather sat in his usual chair in the living room;
Father stood next to him.
Grandfather wore an irritated look on his face. “The mother of Raventhorn’s Alpha is having her birthday in a few days. Now is not the time for your wife to be abroad on a break.”
“You are the one who made Serena lose her job,” I said..53 6/10°

“If she says she needs to rest, then she will rest.”
Grandfather scoffed. “You are really bold, aren’t you?” He set his cup down. “Call Serena back.”
These events maintained the relationships between packs and they benefited Crimson’s standing. Our relationship with them had been great and of course Serena had claimed their hearts and during events like these, they always looked forward to seeing her.
I opened my mouth to respond but a voice cut through from the top of the stairs.
“Serena is not coming back.”
Jenna stood on the landing with her phone in her hand and her face white with fury.
She came down the stairs and stopped in the center of the room and looked at every face before she spoke.
“She gave the house away. She gave her ring away. She gave Kieran the divorce documents and a bank card with the money he demanded.” Her voice climbed with every sentence. “Kieran asked her to pay a billion dollars for her freedom and she sold her family’s heirloom to afford it.

She paid him, and she left, and she will never come back.”
‘The room was a held breath while my anger pulsated like
a second heart.
Fucking Jenna.
“She gave the house to Sophie,” Jenna continued. “Sophie moved in. Sophie redecorated everything. And Kieran did nothing.”
Mother turned to me; her face lost all color. “Is this true?”
