I left the alpha house and went straight to the airport.

The flight was long and my mind did not rest for a single second of it. Cora paced inside me, scraping at the bond, reaching for Aina across the distance. The thread between. us was so faint I could barely feel it; it flickered in and out of my awareness, a dying signal from a place I could not yet reach.

When I landed, I went straight to the address Mark sent

The building was a simple apartment complex, five floors, grey walls, a narrow entrance with a buzzer panel beside the door. I found her unit number and knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again, harder; my knuckles hit the wood with enough force to rattle the frame.

Nothing.

I knocked a third time and pressed my ear against the door and listened. No footsteps, no movement, no ‘breathing on the other side.

My fist tightened at my side; the urge to tear the door

off its hinges crawled up my arms. Cora snarled and I pressed my palm flat against the wood and closed my eyes and tried to breathe.

Where was she?

Was she out?

Was she with Misha?

Was she sitting in his office or his car or his home while I stood in this hallway and knocked on an empty door?

I needed to talk to her. I needed to remind her that she was my wife. She was taking things too far; she was being so fucking difficult and I needed to take her back, but she was not here.

I didn’t have a choice but to wait.

Qne hour became two and two became three. I sat on the floor of the hallway with my back against her door and

my elbows on my knees and I stared at the wall across from me.

She was not coming back.

I wanted to talk to her, to reach an agreement, to tell her she could have her job back and she could have her life, but divorce was off the table. I was never going to let her go. I was going to promise her I would stay away from Sophie and her son. I was going to beg her to stop being

angry at me.

But the years she spent loving me were not enough for her to look back on and hold on to.

Her distrust and her overthinking had swallowed her whole. She could not see past Sophie to the man standing in front of her. She was so focused on things that did not

matter.

I was allowed to have secrets.

I never cheated on her.

If she listened to me, if she gave me a chance to show her, everything would be fine. All she needed to do was pay no mind to Sophie and her son, and our marriage would

survive.

‘I gave up on the apartment and drove to the hospital

where Mark told me she worked.

The reception area was small and clean. I approached the front desk and asked for Serena Thawthorne.

The nurse behind the counter looked at me and shook her head. “I’m sorry, I don’t recognize that name.”

I described her. Height, hair, the department she worked

The nurse checked her screen and shook her head again. “We don’t have anyone by that name on staff.”

I asked three more nurses in the corridor. Each one gave me the same blank stare, the same polite apology, the same answer that told me nothing.

She was a ghost in this city; I could not find her footprint anywhere.

I pulled out my phone and called Mark.

louder than I meant. “She is not at the apartment and the hospital has no record of her.”

Mark went quiet for two seconds. “Alpha, I confirmed the information through—”

“Book me a flight home. Now.”

The call ended and I stood in the hospital lobby with my phone in my hand and my chest caving in.

A message from Sophie appeared on my screen. Something happened. Please come now.

I was not in the mood. I did not want to look at Sophie, did not want to hear her voice, did not want anything to do with her. I shoved the phone into my pocket and went

to the airport.

When I landed, Sophie called again.

“What is it?”

“You can’t find me home. I’m in the hospital,” she said; her voice trembled.

Sophie sat on the edge of a hospital bed; light bruises marked her arms and the side of her neck. Ethan was ‘beside her with his face buried in her lap.

“What happened?” I asked my anger settling just slightly.

“Your mother and your sister.” Sophie’s voice cracked. “They came to the house. They warned me to stay away from you and then they chased me and Ethan out.” Her fingers gripped the bed rail. “They told me nothing belongs to me. And then they hit me.” Tears fell down her cheeks. “I didn’t do anything wrong. I had nowhere to go so I came here.”

My jaw locked. “I’ll talk to my family.”

“Please don’t.” She shook her head. “Everything that happened was my own fault. Your wife is gone and your family has turned against me.” She pressed her hand to her mouth. “It’s not their fault. It’s all mine. I’m so sorry,

Kieran.”

“Stop apologizing,” I said.

I left the hospital room and drove straight to the pack

house. 67 TO

Jenna saw me enter first. She took one look at my face and darted behind Mother.

I moved toward her; my blood was a fire and my fists were tight at my sides. Cora was rattling inside me, growling low and vicious.

Mother stepped between us and planted herself in my path. “You barged in here for what reason?”

“Why did you go after Sophie?” My voice filled the room. “Why did you have to hit her?”

Mother’s eyes blazed. “You come into my house and yell at me because of that woman?”

Jenna spoke from behind her. “We should have cut her tongue instead of just hitting her.”

“I told you to stay away from my life!” Every muscle in my body was wound tight. “Everything is under my control. Stop interfering!”

Mother took a step toward me; her finger rose to my face. “We will not stop. You are ruining your life and you cannot see it. You are so blind, and we don’t even know if

it is Sophie who blinded you or if you blinded yourself.”

“Stay away from my life,” I said through my teeth.

Footsteps came from the hallway. Grandfather walked in with Father behind him.

“Who is shouting in my house?” Grandfather’s voice cut through the room.

He saw me and stopped.

“What about Serena?” Father asked. “You said you were going to bring her back. Where is she?”
