Chapter 70
Kieran
I left Sophie at the hospital and went back to oversee the movers and the contractors.
The new apartment was a blank canvas and I painted it with Serena. I placed the photographs in the same spots, hung the curtains at the same height, arranged the furniture in the same layout. Every detail matched the house we shared; the picture frames sat where they used to sit, the bookshelf stood where it used to stand.
When I finished; the apartment was a replica of our home. A copy of a life she had already walked away from.
Trevor lived two floors up. He came up a few hours after the last contractor left. He stood in the doorway and looked around the room.
He tsked. “Even if you rebuild the house brick by brick, you won’t get her back.” He leaned against the doorframe. “The best way is to explain to Serena what is going on.”

Trevor dropped into the chair across from me. “Did talking to Sophie make you soft hearted?”
“I don’t want to keep repeating myself.” I did not look up from the papers. “If my grandfather finds Sophie, he will kill her. I am protecting her. That is all.”
“Why is your grandfather targeting only Sophie in this world?” Trevor crossed his arms. “It’s because she is a bad person with ulterior motives.”
My hand tightened around my pen. “She isn’t. She is kind and she has suffered for years and she made sacrifices because of me.” I set the pen down. “Sophie does not deserve to be living this kind of life.”
Trevor laughed; the sound bounced off the walls of my
new apartment.
“Listen to what you just said.” He leaned forward. “Now tell me, is Serena the one who deserves to live a life where
her husband meets another woman and has a child with her?”
“Ethan is not mine.”

“Serena doesn’t know that.” He held my gaze. “So what does it count?”
I pressed my fingers against the desk. “Serena was spoiled by her parents when she grew up. I have never made her suffer in our marriage and I treated her well.” I exhaled. “But Sophie is different. She does not come from a prominent family; she worked all her life, she suffered many things, and she deserves happiness.”
My phone rang on the table.
The number was unknown. I answered and a woman’s
voice came through.
“Mr. Thawthorne, I’m the nurse assigned to, Ms. Sophie.”
“Did something happen to her?” I asked.
“Well, your patient Sophie attempted to take her own life. She is stable but you need to come immediately.”
I shot up from the sofa; the documents scattered off the desk and hit the floor.

Treyor was on his feet behind me. We drove to the hospital in silence and when we reached the hospital, I

quickly went straight to Sophie’s room.
* She sat on the bed with fresh bandages wrapped around
her wrists. Her face was pale and her expression was hard; irritation sat behind her eyes instead of remorse.
“How could you do this?” My voice came out rough as I made my way over to the bed. “What about Ethan? What would happen to your son?”
Sophie’s face twisted; she thrashed against the pillows. “You started this!” Her voice cracked. “You want me dead so I decided to do it myself.”
“What are you talking about?”
The tears broke free. “You said you wanted to tell your wife everything. That means your grandfather will find out.” She gripped the bed rail. “And your grandfather will kill me, Kieran. You know that.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I do!” She sat up straighter; the bandages on her wrists pulled tight. “Years ago, your grandfather gave me an ultimatum. He told me to break up with you or he would strip you of your position as Alpha and give it to the

illegitimate child instead.”
‘My blood went cold.
“To make sure you got everything you deserved,” Sophie continued; tears poured down her face, “I broke up with you. I gave you up so you could have this life.” Her voice splintered. “But now you don’t care. Now you want me dead.”
I could not move.
“I suffered because of that choice.” She was sobbing now; each word tore out of her throat. “My husband raped me. He beat me. He destroyed me for years.” Her hands shook against the sheets. “I went through all of that because I wanted you to have the pack. I wanted you to have the life you deserved. And this is how you repay me.”
She slid off the bed and dropped to her knees, without getting up, she used her knees to meet me, she grabbed the hem of my pants.
“Please.” She gripped the fabric of my pants. “Please don’t tell Serena. If your grandfather finds out that Ethan is Botyours, he will give us a fate worse than death “She:54

My life became this because I chose to help you. I saved your life. Please don’t turn your back on me.”
My chest was a cage; something inside it was breaking apart, rib by rib.
I reached down and took her arms. She fought me, clinging to my legs, but I lifted her gently and guided her back onto the bed.
“I won’t tell Serena,” I said.
Sophie’s body went slack; the tension drained from her shoulders and she pressed her face into the pillow and
cried with relief.
“Thank you.” She whispered it over and over. “Thank you, thank you.”
“I promise I will keep her distance,” she said through the tears. “I won’t cause trouble between you and Serena
anymore.”
I nodded my head. “I’ll come check on you later,” I said.
Estepped out of the room.

I did not know about the ultimatum. I did not know that my grandfather had threatened to strip me of the pack ‘if Sophie did not leave. All those years, I blamed him for sending her away, but I never knew she chose to go. She traded her freedom for my future and she paid for it with her body and her dignity and her peace.
