The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 72

Chapter 72

Serena

My eyes nearly rolled to the back of my head.

Kieran stood in front of me before I could take another step; he had crossed the distance between us and planted himself in my path. His eyes dropped to my suitcase, then came back up to my face, with the ghost of a smile sitting on his mouth.

What was he happy about?

Aina stirred inside me; she pressed forward, desperate to get closer, to feel the warmth of Cora through the bond, to let their hearts dance together again. Moved by the moon and the hormones burning through my body, the only thing Aina wanted to feel was sheer pleasure. Nothing else mattered, not how I have been treated by this mate of hers for years.

I did not want that. Aina did not control me; it was the other way around.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming back t night?:57

would have come to pick you up.”

He reached for me and I took a step back.

His hand hung in the air; he looked at the distance I put between us and then he dropped it to his side.

“Did you not receive the letter from my lawyer?” I asked.

He swallowed; the muscles in his throat moved and his jaw tightened. “The festival is tomorrow. We should be focused on that.” His voice was steady but his eyes were not. “I’ll come for you and we’ll see my family together. We can reignite our bond.”

There it was. The swerve, the pivot, the careful sidestep around the word divorce. He moved around it with his eyes straight ahead, pretending it did not exist.

Behind him, a slim, tall figure appeared in the doorway of my parents’ house.

I glanced at Kieran and shook my head.

“We will not be reigniting any bond,” I said; my voice was flat, “And I am not going to see your family.”

His brow creased; irritation carved deep lines into his face. He stepped forward again and his hand came up toward mine.

Before his fingers could reach me, a body slid between us.

Josh grabbed my suitcase with one hand and took my other hand with his; his fingers laced through mine and locked there.

“I’m so happy to see you.” He grinned at me; his face was brighter than I remembered, just a few weeks away had completely changed him. “Mom and Dad told me to come get you. Let’s go inside.”

He turned and walked me toward the front door. Neither

of us turned around; neither of us gave the man behind us a single second of our time.

Josh’s grip on my hand was warm and firm and I squeezed it once.

The front door closed behind us.

The door shut and the porch light went dark and I stood on the street with my hands at my sides and the night air cold against my face.

Serena’s family used to welcome me at this door. Frederick would shake my hand and Sylvia would press a cup of tea into my palm before I could sit down.

Tonight, her brother took her hand and walked her inside and did not look at me once, and Serena followed him

without turning around.

I walked back to my car, got in, and drove to Trevor’s bar.

The hallway of private rooms was dim and quiet. I pushed a door open and found Jenna sitting on the sofa with her legs crossed and a drink in her hand.

My jaw locked; the heat in my chest shifted direction and aimed itself at my sister.

“What are you doing here so late at night?” I asked.

“Grandfather told me to find you.” She set her drink down. “He wants you to bring Serena home to celebrate the festival.”

I nodded; it was already in my plans.

Jenna read my face and whatever she saw made her slide off the sofa and shift behind Trevor. She tucked herself behind his shoulder and peered out at me with wide eyes.

Trevor grabbed Jenna’s bag and stood up; his hand closed around hers. “I’m going to drop Jenna at home,” he said, and they walked out together.

The room went quiet. I dropped into the chair and reached for the bottle on the table, checked the glass to make sure it was clean, and poured myself a drink.

The door opened again.

Sophie walked in and my stomach turned; my body rejected her presence before my brain could catch up.

She read my face and spoke immediately. “I was in the area and I watched you come in.” She took a step back toward the door. “I just wanted to say hello and I’ll be on my way out.”

I nodded.
