Chapter 75

Serena

Kieran caught up to me in the corridor.

“Why did you say those things to Sophie?” His voice was low but the edge in it could cut glass. “You and I are mates. You should not have spoken to her that way.”

Aina pressed against my ribs; she whimpered and pushed toward the bond, toward Cora, but I shoved her down and kept her there. She was always so easy for Kieran, ignoring the times he had hurt me.

“I regret being married to you.” The words left my mouth and each one was a stone I set down; my shoulders felt lighter with every syllable. “I regret being your mate and I want this divorce to end everything between us.”

His jaw tightened. “You’re exaggerating. It wasn’t-”

“You gave your love to another woman.” No matter how many times I spoke, I could never get it across to him that his actions were not producing a tantrum in me but this was the real deal. This was me no longer caring.■

“You gave your care and your concern to another woman. You brought harm to my own brother for the sake of another woman.” I held his gaze. “I cannot stand by and still be married to you.”

“Sophie only wanted to smooth things out,” he said. “But you gave her a tough time.”

“Where on earth have you seen a wife and a mistress being best friends?”

Did he actually expect me to be chummy with her, to invite her into my home and call her family?

He pressed his fingers against the bridge of his nose. “If you’re angry, take it out on me. Don’t be violent toward Sophie.”

My hand moved on its own.

The slap connected with his cheek; the sound cracked through the corridor and my palm burned from the impact. His head turned with the force of it and his eyes

went wide.

↳slapped him again.

“This is me being angry.” My chest heaved. “This is me being frustrated. This is me hating you.”

He stared at me; his cheek was red and his mouth was open and no sound came out.

“I never want to see you again.” My voice was steady and cold. “Stay away from me and stay away from my family. And make sure you tell your dear mistress never to come near me again.”

I turned around and walked away; my heels clicked against the hospital floor and I did not look back.

When I got home, my parents were in the living room. They saw Josh’s wrapped wrist and my mother’s hand flew to her mouth; my father crossed the room and took Josh’s arm gently and turned it over and studied the bandage.

They fussed over him. My mother brought a pillow for his arm and my father adjusted the sling and they spoke to him in low, careful voices, and I stood by the door and watched all of it and my chest caved in.

The tears came before I could stop them.

“This is all my fault,” I said; my voice broke apart. “All of

this is because of me.”

My mother looked up. “Your brother has a bad temper.

This will teach him a lesson.”

My father nodded. “Don’t worry yourself, Serena.”

But the worry was a hand around my throat; it squeezed and did not let go. If I were free of Kieran, none of this would be happening. Josh’s wrist would not be in a sling and Sophie would not be showing up at my parents’ door and my family would not be collateral damage in a war I did not start.

I could not go to the pack elders because the elders were Kieran’s own blood, and I could not appeal to the council because marrying him was my choice and nobody forced me into it.

And then there was the baby.

My hand pressed flat against my stomach; the fabric of my shirt was thin and my palm was warm against the skin underneath. If Kieran found out, I would never be freg of him. He would use this child as a chain and wrap it around my neck and I would spend the rest of my life

right where I was now.

I went to my room and closed the door and pulled out my phone.

My lawyer answered on the second ring.

“I need the divorce finalized,” I said. “If he won’t sign, I want to take this to court. I don’t care how long it takes or what it costs. I need to be free of him.”

I walked into my new building and Trevor stood in the lobby with his arms crossed and a grin on his face.

“I cannot believe you beat up Josh,” he said.

“How do you know about that?” I asked with my eyebrows knitted.

“Serena called me.” He fell into step beside me. “She told me to warn you to stay away from her family.”

I pressed the elevator button. “I never tried to hurt Josh. He tried to wriggle free and his wrist got hurt in the

process.”

“Say whatever you want.” Trevor stepped into the elevator with me. “Josh got hurt because of you and that is the truth.”

The doors closed and we rode up in silence.

I stepped out on my floor and walked toward my apartment; Trevor followed without invitation.

“Why did Sophie go to Serena’s house?” he asked. “Sophie knew what would happen and that’s why she did

it.”

“That’s not what happened.” I unlocked my door and

pushed it open. “Sophie only wanted to make peace with Serena, but Serena didn’t want to see her and ended up hurting her.”

Trevor shook his head. “If you saw Sophie stab someone with a knife, would you still believe her if she told you the person ran into her blade?”

My jaw locked; Cora stirred inside me, a low growl that vibrated through my chest.

“Sophie is nothing like what you’re painting her to be,” 6/8
