Kieran pulled me toward him; his grip was iron around my wrist.
“Even if you want to protect your brother,” he said, “there is a limit. He has to apologize for what he did.”
I struggled against his hand and twisted my arm. “Sophie provoked me first. She came to my parents’ house and ran her mouth and Josh stepped in.”}
“Sophie only wanted to make peace.” His brow creased. “What is the problem with that?”
The anger was a living thing inside me; it pulsed in my temples and crawled up my throat.
“So because your mistress wanted to make amends,” I said, “I should just give it up? I should just accept her and
move on?”
“Sophie was kind enough not to press charges against Josh.” His voice hardened. “You should be than ful for:59

My eyes moved from Sophie on the bed to Kieran in front of me. “If I told you Sophie planned all of this herself, would you believe me?”
“Sophie wouldn’t do such a thing!” He yelled it; the sound bounced off the ward walls and rattled in my skull.
My eyes burned; the tears sat behind them and pressed and pressed. But this man did not chase me to another country because he cared for me. He chased me because he loved control, because he loved having a wife he could bend and shape and silence.
Not anymore.
“Since you’ve made up your mind about who to believe,” I said; my voice did not crack, “we don’t need to be talking anymore.”
We stared at each other; his jaw was tight and his eyes were hard and neither of us blinked.
“If you have nothing more to say,” Kieran said, “then learn how to shut up.”
Josh’s voice tore through the room behind us. “Don’t tell,

my sister to shut up!”
He thrashed against Kieran’s hold; his body twisted and his free arm swung and his feet kicked against the floor.
A pop echoed through the ward; the sound was sharp and wet and wrong, and Josh’s face went white.
“Josh!” I screamed his name and shoved Kieran aside; my palms hit his chest and I pushed past him and dropped to my knees beside my brother.
His wrist hung at an angle that made my stomach lurch, and I grabbed his hand gently and held it between both of
mine.
“I’m sorry.” My voice splintered. “This is all my fault. I’m
so sorry.”
Josh looked at me; his jaw clenched so hard the tendons in his neck stood out, but his eyes were steady and fierce.
“When I get older,” he said through his teeth, “I will make sure I take revenge and even things out for you.”
The tears won and I bent forward; my shoulders shook:59 and the sobs tore out of me. They ripped through my

chest and burned my throat and I could not stop them. My little brother’s wrist snapped because my husband could not let go, and the unfairness of it sat on my chest
and crushed me.
“I’ll get you the best doctors,” I said through the tears. “I promise.”
Kieran’s voice came from behind me. “Stop crying. I’ll take you to a good hospital.”
I lifted my head and looked at him, and a laugh broke out of me instead of words.
It did not stop. I laughed so hard my ribs ached and the more I laughed the more the tears fell; they ran down my face and dripped off my chin and I did not wipe them away. The laughter and the crying mixed together into something ugly and raw and I did not care who heard it.
I helped Josh to his feet and we walked toward the emergency room; his good hand gripped my arm and I held him steady.
Footsteps followed behind us and I glanced over my shoulder; Kieran was right there.

“Let me take him to the emergency room,” he said. “I-”
Sophie’s voice cut through from the bed behind him; she cleared her throat and then the crying started.
“My stomach hurts,” Sophie called out; her voice wobbled with practiced agony. “Kieran, I need help.”
Kieran’s eyes moved from me to the room behind him.
“You can take Josh to the emergency room,” he said to me. “I’ll come check on you both when I’m done with Sophie.”
Josh kicked the ward door with every ounce of strength he had; the metal frame shook and the sound cracked through the corridor.
“Both of us never want to see you again,” Josh said; his voice was low and steady and it carried more venom than his fists ever could.
I did not look at Kieran. I held my brother and we walked down the corridor together and I did not turn around.
The nurses took Josh from me at the emergency room.

and called my parents. I told them where we were and what happened.
They arrived fast; Frederick’s face was grey and Sylvia held my hands without speaking.
After the doctor set Josh’s wrist and wrapped it, I helped him into my parents’ car and told them I would take care of the hospital fee and they should take Josh home.
“We’ll wait for you outside,” Sylvia said.
I shook my head. “Go. I’ll be fine.”
They left and I watched the car disappear around the
corner.
