The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 94

Chapter 94

Serena

Kieran stood in the doorway and his mouth hung open and his eyes sat fixed on my belly; the color left his face in a rush and his hand gripped the doorframe and his knuckles went white against the wood.

The room stirred around me. One by one, our friends rose to their feet; their eyes bounced between Kieran and me and then the congratulations poured out.

“Kieran! Serena is pregnant!”

“You two are going to make a beautiful family.”

“Congratulations, Alpha!”

Kieran blinked. His jaw closed and his spine straightened and his hand released the doorframe and he stepped into

the room. The shock vanished from his face so fast it was

a magic trick; one second his mouth hung open and the next his composure was a wall, smooth and steady and built to fool every person in this room.

from start to finish. “Serena and I are going to have a child.”

My fingers curled around the armrest of my chair; Aina pressed hard against my ribs and the bond between us hummed and pulsed and reached toward Cora and I hated how my body responded to his presence even now. He did not see this coming; the wideness of his eyes in that first second stripped him bare and no amount of composure could erase what I already saw.

He turned to Trevor. “What’s going on here? Serena is pregnant and you’re throwing a party?”

“It’s a welcome party,” Trevor said. “She deserves it.”

“I do deserve it,” I said.

The friends crowded closer; their voices overlapped and their words bled together and each one was a needle pressed into a wound they did not know existed.

“Kieran is so protective of Serena.”

“He doesn’t want anything to happen to their baby.”

My chest tightened; the words were thorns and they dug in deeper with every syllable. My jaw ached from the effort of keeping my face neutral and my fingers dug into the armrest so hard the leather creased under my nails.

“No,” I said; my voice cut through the room and sliced the chatter dead. “Kieran and I are in the middle of a divorce. We are going to get divorced.”

Every mouth closed. Faces froze and glasses paused halfway to mouths and the music from the speaker became the only sound in the room.

“If you’re getting a divorce,” someone asked, “then why have a baby? A baby is supposed to bring a husband and wife together.”

“The marriage between Kieran and me is past anything a baby can save.” I met their stares one by one; my voice did not shake and my hands did not tremble and I meant every word. “Our marriage is over and the baby isn’t his.”

Kieran stood in the center of the room with his eyes on me and his mouth shut. He did not move, did not argue, did not defend himself; the silence from him was a scream that only I could hear. His shock held him captive

and he could not break free of it, and for the first time

since I met this man, he had no words.

His hand closed around my wrist.

He pulled me to my feet and led me out of the private room; his stride was fast and his grip was firm and the hallway blurred past me. He pushed open a door at the end of the corridor and pulled me into a room that was dark and empty and quiet. The door shut behind us.

He released my wrist.

“What are you telling everybody in there?” His voice was rough; the composure from the party room was gone and the rawness underneath sat exposed. “What is the meaning of this? Why are you saying the baby isn’t mine?”
