The Alpha's Mafia Luna novel Chapter 122

Chapter 122

The sound of a car engine outside the house made me lift my head from Damian’s shoulder. Mira had just walked out with a tray of untouched tea when the

heavy knock hit the front door.

Damian stilled beside me.

Let me get it,Mira said, already padding toward the door.

She opened it, and I heard the low rumble of a familiar voice. One I hadn’t heard since the last time he tried breaking into this houseand I smacked him

across the head with a frying pan.

Taurus.

He stepped into the room with all the subtlety of a thunderstorm. Towering. Intimidating. Still wearing that worn leather jacket like some outlaw from a

past I barely understood. But this time, there was no aggression on his face. Just a haunted sort of calm. Eyes pinned straight to mine.

Oh,I muttered, arms crossing automatically, you again.

He stepped inside, ducking slightly as if the doorframe wasn’t made for him. Well, it’s good to see you too, princess. At least you didn’t try to hit me with a

frying pan this time.

I rolled my eyes. Mira gave a soft snort of laughter before quickly hiding it.

Cut the sarcasm,I said, narrowing my eyes. Why are you here?

Taurus scratched the side of his neck. Because you deserve to know the truth. No more secrets. No more dodging the past.

He turned briefly to Damian and nodded. I spoke to him before I came. Figured you’d want him here too.

I looked at Damian. He gave me a small nod, his expression unreadable. I didn’t say anything, just sank back into the couch Taurus took up space in the

middle of the room like he owned it.

I came here once before,he began. Got attacked with kitchenware. But this time, I think we all have something to clear up.

I didn’t respond. My throat tightened, but I waited.

Taurus sighed. You remember Kael, obviously.

Don’t be stupid,I snapped. Of course I do.

I mean,he said, voice lower now, you remember his wife.

A lump rose in my throat.

I’ve been in her room,I murmured. I saw her things. Her scentit’s still on her clothes.

Taurus nodded, looking down. She was his mate. His anchor.

I clenched my fists. I know. But what does that have to do with now?

He met my gaze. She was murdered. A long time ago. Kael never recovered from it. He was obsessed with finding the one who did it.

That partwasn’t new. Kael never talked about her much, but the grief was always theresettled in his shoulders, his silences.

He found a lead,Taurus said. Went after the guy. But the bastard turned out to be more dangerous than he thought. He killed Kael too.

My stomach dropped.

I had always wondered. Always tried to piece it together in my mind. And now, the answer was far simplerand more brutalthan I’d expected.

Wait, I breathed. You meanKael died chasing his wife’s murderer?

Taurus nodded. Yeah.

And.. Damian?I asked, voice small.

Taurus lifted a brow and then tilted his head toward Damian. Your lover boy over there? He wasn’t even close to the region when Kael died. I checked myself. It wasn’t him.

I froze.

The air around me felt thinner, the floor unsteady. I turned to Damian. He said nothingjust looked at me with quiet eyes. That silence said more than

words ever could.

All this time, I had believed the worst.

And I’d been wrong.

Taurus crossed his arms and exhaled. You want someone to blame. I get it. But don’t look in the wrong direction.

My mouth parted, then closed again. Sowho was it? The murderer?

That’s still being worked out,he muttered. Let’s just sayI’m not done yet.

Mira finally spoke, her voice soft. Is this why you’ve been disappearing, Taurus? You’ve been tracking him?

He nodded once. Started out about revenge. But Kaelhe was part of that too. We didn’t always get along, but no one deserves to go out like that.

I blinked rapidly, trying to push down the tears that threatened to come.

Kael had been strong. Loyal. A force. But also wounded. Carrying something I never got the chance to ask about.

You’re saying he died fighting for her.

Yeah,Taurus answered simply. And I was too damn late.

Silence settled around us like smoke. No one moved.

Then my phone vibrated sharply in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen.

Lucas.

1 hesitated, then picked up.

Hello?

Serene, his familiar voice filled my ear. Hey. Just checking in.

His tone was gentle, the kind he only used when he was being sincere.

How are you?he asked.

I glanced around the room. Mira sitting tensely, Taurus leaning against the fireplace, Damian watching me with quiet regret.

I’ve been better,I said honestly.

I figured,Lucas replied. The others at work have been asking. Your absence didn’t go unnoticed.

My heart skipped. Work. Right. I hadn’t thought about that place in days.

Tell them I’ll check in soon.

Take your time. I justwanted to be sure you were okay. And let you know I’m here if you need anything.

I closed my eyes. Thanks, Lucas.

Anytime,he said, and then the line went dead.

I set the phone down beside me.

My mind spun, a whirlpool of truths and lies, and everything in between.

Kael wasn’t killed in a power game.

Damian hadn’t betrayed him.

And Taurusfor once, wasn’t the storm I feared.

Why now?I asked Taurus. Why come here?

He shrugged. Because secrets rot people from the inside out. And you deserve more than that.

I looked at him, at Mira, then Damian.

He gave a single nod, quiet. No excuses. No explanations. Just the truth, finally out in the open.

And it crushed me.

All this timeI had believed a lie.

PPP

I wrapped my arms around myself as the silence stretched.

I thought I knew everything,I whispered.

No one ever does,Mira murmured gently.

Taurus stepped back toward the door. I’ll be around. Just figured you deserved to know.

And just like that, he was gone.

I stood there, breath uneven, trying to make sense of the puzzle that had haunted me for months. Damian stepped forward, placing a tentative hand on my

shoulder.

You believed I did it,he said softly. And I didn’t blame you. But I never stopped trying to protect you. Even when you hated me.

My throat closed up.

You don’t have to say anything,he added. I just wanted you to know.

I turned to him slowly, tears pricking my eyesbut not falling.

You’re right,I said. I believed it. And I was wrong.

He said nothing. Just stood there with me, in the middle of the storm I’d built with my own pain and assumptions.

I glanced toward the hallway, where Mira disappeared with the tea.

Everything’s changing,I said aloud.
