Chapter 84
I didn’t sleep.
How could I?
I kept thinking about Kael’s smile. The way he had held me gently
during the dance. The way he’d laughed softly when he recognized
me, even through the mask.
And now…
Gone.
Dead.
Murdered in some hidden house in the woods. Just a headline on the
morning news. Just a name spoken by a heartless anchor.
Kael Devrin. Thirty–two years old. Cause of death: unknown. Suspect:
unknown.
My hands were shaking. I didn’t know how long I’d been sitting on the edge of my bed. The cup I was holding had slipped from my hands earlier. I hadn’t picked up the pieces. They were still scattered on the

CRACK.
The sound echoed like a gunshot.
Blood spurted as Taurus stumbled, swearing loudly, catching himself
on the desk, blinking furiously in shock.
“Serene!” Damian shouted, rising from his seat.
But she didn’t answer him. Her eyes were feral–burning with hatred
-and fixed solely on Taurus.
“Take that, you murderer,” she spat, voice laced with venom. “There’s
more where that came from. Make sure you fucking look left and right
before crossing the damn road, Taurus, because I’m coming for you
I’m going to end you, you sick bastard!”
Taurus looked at her, stunned and bleeding, hand to his forehead.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?!”
She stepped toward him, chest heaving. “If I had a gun, I’d unload it into your empty skull. You think you’re smart? Think you can play God and take away the only family I had?” Her voice cracked with raw grief. “You both are full of shit. You think I don’t know? You think I
can’t feel it in my soul when a monster is near?”

“Serene,” Damian said again, this time more forcefully. “What the
hell are you talking about?!”
She turned on him briefly. “Don’t act clueless. You know what he did.
You protect him–this soulless piece of garbage. You let him in here.
Into our space. Into this house.”
Blood was streaming down Taurus’s temple. He didn’t speak, just
glared, wiping his sleeve against the gash.
“You’re out of your damn mind,” he muttered.
Serene stepped forward, raising the frying pan again.
“Taurus, get the hell out!” Damian barked.
There was a pause–Taurus’s cold eyes locked with Damian’s for a
moment–then he turned and staggered out, leaving behind a trail of
crimson.
The door slammed behind him.
Silence.
Serene stood there, chest rising and falling rapidly, the bloodied pan
slipping from her fingers and clattering to the ground.

Damian stared at her for a long moment, then walked slowly to his
laptop.
“You want the truth?” he said, voice low. “Fine. Sit down.”
She didn’t move.
He didn’t wait.
The screen came to life, showing grainy surveillance footage. Damian
spoke as the video played.
“This is from the night Kael died. A private cabin–off–grid. He was
meeting someone. We don’t know who. But he wasn’t alone.”
The video showed Kael pacing nervously in the small, dimly lit room.
A shadow appeared in the doorway. The footage glitched. Then-
static. The camera died.
“That’s all we have. Just minutes before his death. Someone
destroyed the camera right after. But I wasn’t there. And I didn’t kill
him.”
Serene’s lips trembled.
“I didn’t kill him,” Damian said again. “You want to hate me? Fine.

But not for that.”
Silence stretched between them. Too thick. Too heavy.
Finally, Serene pulled in a shaky breath and whispered, “I can’t be
here anymore.”
Damian blinked. “What?”
“This house… it’s suffocating. Everything here reminds me of what
I’ve lost. Of you. Of Kael. Of my father. I need to leave, Damian. I
need to clear my head.”
He stepped toward her, voice low. “You can’t just walk away from all
of this.”
“I’m not walking away forever. I just need space. From you. From
everything.”
“Serene-”
She looked at him, eyes glassy. “Please don’t chase after me. Just…
just let me breathe.”
She turned and walked toward the bedroom, dragging out a suitcase. Her hands moved mechanically as she folded her clothes, eyes hollow

and movements slow. Damian stood in the doorway, unmoving.
“Where are you going?” he asked finally, voice softer.
“I’m going to my father’s pack,” she replied. “They’ll let me stay for a
while. I’ll be safe there.”
“I should at least drop you off-”
“No.” She zipped the suitcase shut. “I’ll take one of your cars. I know
the way.”
Damian didn’t argue. He stood aside and watched her carry the
suitcase down the stairs. Watched her shoulders sag as she walked
past the bloodstain Taurus had left behind. Watched the front door
close behind her.
And did nothing.
The road stretched before her, long and winding, but her hands didn’t
tremble as they gripped the steering wheel. She didn’t cry. Not until
she saw the small wooden sign marking the edge of Naia’s land.
The house was modest, nestled between thick trees with rose vines trailing over the fence and a garden full of wildflowers blooming in
chaotic color. It was quiet. Peaceful. Safe.

She rang
the doorbell.
The door opened almost immediately.
Naia stood there, wide–eyed. And then she pulled Serene into a tight
hug.
Serene collapsed into her arms.
And for the first time in days, she allowed herself to fall apart.

floor. Just like my heart.
Then I heard the footsteps.
I didn’t need to look to know it was Damian.
He didn’t knock.
He pushed the door open like he owned the place.
“Serene,” he said, voice low but steady. “We need to talk.”
I didn’t look at him.
“I said get out,” I whispered.
He ignored me. Walked in and shut the door behind him.
“Please don’t do this right now,” I said, still facing the window.
“I didn’t kill him.”
I stood up slowly and turned around.
Damian’s eyes locked with mine. Fierce. Cold. But under it–regret?

I shook my head. “I don’t believe you.”
He stepped back like I’d hit him.
“You said you love me,” I whispered. “But this is your way of showing it? Killing people who make me feel safe?”
“I didn’t kill him!” he shouted, breaking. “But I’m so pissed I didn’t
get to! For touching you–for thinking he could have you–for that
fucking kiss!”
I stared at him through tears.
“You said you love me,” I said, voice trembling. “But you take
everything from me.”
“You don’t understand-”
“I do,” I cut him off. “That’s the problem. I understand exactly who
you are.”
“Then you know I didn’t kill him.”
“I don’t know anything anymore,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t believe I won’t see Kael again. And all you can think
about is the kiss.”

This time, I didn’t cry into a pillow.
I stared out the window, fists clenched, heart shattered, rage
blooming like fire in my chest.
Whoever did this took Kael from me.
Whoever did this would regret it.
And if Damian had any part in it–any knowledge, any piece of guilt…
I’d make him wish he hadn’t crossed me.
