Ian stopped in his tracks, watching as Chloe, dressed in a white coat with her hair tied back in a ponytail, walked side by side with Eric down the hallway.

His gaze lingered on Chloe’s perfectly done makeup.

He and Chloe had been childhood sweethearts for years, and she never wore makeup around him.

Ian couldn’t help but think, ‘Girls always dress up for the ones they want to impress.

Mia spotted Chloe and walked over with a warm smile. “Hi, Chloe!”

Chloe and Eric came over to greet them politely.

Feeling lan’s sharp gaze on her, Chloe took the initiative to say, “Hi, Ian.”

Miranda glanced back at Ian, let out a small sigh, and said, “Chloe, I’m here for something, so why don’t we have lunch together?”

As the elder, Miranda’s invitation was hard for Chloe to refuse.

By lunchtime, Chloe showed up at the restaurant and saw that only Ian was there.

Chloe couldn’t help but sigh.

Seriously, it was like the whole world was trying to play matchmaker for her and Ian.

Anyone who knew she was the one who called off the engagement would just say she was asking for trouble.

Ian looked up from his phone and saw Chloe standing there, looking a little unsure.

He got up, walked over, took her bag from her, and held out a chair for her to sit.

Chloe stood by her seat, not in a hurry to sit down. “Where are Miranda and Mia?”

Jan’s deep eyes locked onto her face. “You said we’re childhood friends. My mom and my sister aren’t here. Can’t you just have lunch with me alone?”

With fan putting it that way, Chloe couldn’t really argue with him.

She sat down across from Ian, totally confident and at ease.

Once Chloe had placed her order, she passed the menu to Jan.

Ian didn’t take it. “Whatever you order is fine with me.”

Chloe hesitated for a moment, then put the menu down in front of him. “Like I’d know what you want.”

lan was super picky about food.

In her previous life, trying to please him, she’d even cooked for an herself, only to end up looking like a total disaster.

This time, there was no way she’d ever do that again.

She didn’t even feel like ordering food for him anymore.

Ian kept his eyes fixed on Chloe, then turned to the waiter and said he’d have whatever she was having.

As they ate, lan asked, “How’s your hospital internship been lately?”

Chloe’s eyes lit up at the mention of work. “It’s been pretty awesome. Eric’s been looking out for me at the hospital.”

The moment Chloe brought up Eric, the look on Ian’s face froze for a second.

He unconsciously tightened his grip on his fork and knife, his eyes locked on Chloe.

Chloe met his gaze and felt a chill run down her spine.

With that intense look on Ian’s face and the way he was gripping his knife and fork, Chloe felt like he might just snap and strangle her right there.

Chloe cleared her throat, then picked up a piece of fruit with her fork and dropped it onto Ian’s plate. “Here, have some orange. Maybe it’ll help you chill out.”

Ian quietly set down his utensils, just staring at the orange sitting on his plate for a while, saying nothing.

He asked Chloe, “Do you really know Eric that well?”

Chloe didn’t get what he was getting at. “Why do you ask?”

Ian lowered his gaze. “He was a total butterball as a kid. Must’ve skipped a generation or something.”

Chloe frowned, staring at Ian, but she still couldn’t figure out what he was trying to say.

She pointed at her head and asked, “Ian, can you just spell it out for me? My brain’s just not keeping up.”

Ian’s face was stormy, pushing his food around without much interest. “If you can’t wrap your head around it, go home and mull it over. Maybe you’ll get it eventually.”

Chloe wondered, ‘What’s his problem today?’

Lunch was a quiet standoff, both of them secretly plotting their own moves.

As they left the restaurant, Chloe pointed across the street. “Don” worry about me. I’ll just walk back.”

lan gestured toward the hospital entrance. “My car’s parked out front. Come on, let’s walk back together.”

Chloe couldn’t help but pout, but she still ended up strolling alongside Ian toward the hospital.

When they got to the parking lot in front of the outpatient building, Ian stopped and said, “Chloe, hop in my car for a minute. There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

Chloe was starting to get impatient. “I’ve got to check in soon. If you’ve got something to say, just say it. Otherwise, I’m heading out.”

She couldn’t shake the feeling that lan was acting weird today.

It was like he was possessed or something.

Ian gave Chloe a look from above, his eyes locked on her face. “I bought back that jewelry set you auctioned off. It’s in the trunk of my car.”

Chloe was totally thrown off, honestly shocked. “I already paid you back. Why would you go and buy it back?”

lan replied. “I got it back to give it to you.”

Chloe blurted out, “I don’t want it!”

Chloe said, “Since you paid for it, it’s yours now. Once I’ve got enough saved up. I’ll buy it back from you. Just don’t go raising the price on me.”

A mix of emotions flickered across Ian’s face as he stared at Chlo.

He told her, “I’ll hold onto the jewelry for you. Whenever you want it, just let me know.”

They locked eyes.

Chloe just rolled her eyes inwardly.

No way I’m trading my life for a bunch of jewels, Chloe thought She knew exactly what was more important.

Chloe refused to take the jewelry back, and Ian didn’t push it any further.

He walked up to Chloe and said, “I’m heading to Marlovia for a business trip in a couple of days. The incense and medicine you blended for me are all used up. Can you whip up some more?”

Chloe hesitated for a second, then told him to come by the hospital and sign up for an appointment tomorrow.

But lan wasn’t having it. “Just make it, and I’ll swing by to pick it up. No need for all that registration hassle.”

Seeing Chloe still hesitate, Ian added, “Aren’t you always going on about how we’re childhood friends? Don’t you treat me like your friend?”

Chloe couldn’t really argue with that.

Ian said, “I have been losing sleep and getting killer headaches all day. Shouldn’t you at least care a little?”

Chloe had no comeback for that.

She knew fan was always playing mind games and never showed much warmth.

But she never thought he’d be this manipulative and act all innogent at the same time.
