After Ian and Victor stepped in to mediate, the elders from both the Lewis family and Hamilton family decided to have Patrick and Mia get engaged by the end of the year.

Just like that, everything between Mia and Patrick was settled.

After the Lewis family left, Mia was still in a total haze.

‘Did I just get swept into an engagement without even knowing what was happening?’ Mia wondered, still completely lost.

Outside of Hamilton Manor, Patrick didn’t leave right away.

He and Ian sat in the car, cracked the windows, and lit up cigarettes.

Ian glanced over and said, “You took a few hits from Edward’s cane. Don’t you need to see a doctor or something?”

Patrick grinned, looking pretty pleased with himself. “Since when did you start worrying about me?”

Ian gazed out the window, completely zoned out.

He kept smoking in silence, not saying a word.

Patrick watched Ian for a moment before saying, “I’ve already made up my mind. Once Mia’s out of school, I’m putting a ring on her.”

He grinned, “You and Chloe better get a move on, too. Wouldn’t want your kid sister beating you to the altar, right?”

When Chloe was mentioned, Ian’s eyelashes quivered noticeably. He couldn’t help but react.

‘Me and Chloe… That’s never going to happen. Not in this lifetime,’ Ian thought bitterly.

Patrick could feel the gloom rolling off lan.

He held his cigarette in one hand, idly rubbing his knee with the other.

He asked, “Ian, just be straight with me. What’s really going on between you and Chloe?”

Just a few days before they were supposed to get married, they were practically joined at the hip.

But ever since Chloe left Ian hanging at the courthouse, things between them have been off.

Patrick had tried to get Chloe to open up a few times, but she just kept her lips sealed.

He’d asked Ian, too, but Ian just clammed up every time.

Patrick was about to lose his mind over it.

Ian turned his head and gave Patrick a tired look. “Yeah, the wedding is off. What else is there to say?”

Chloe had said that she didn’t love him.

It wasn’t just Chloe. Everyone around him thought the same thing.

He even used to believe that.

They were childhood friends, and Chloe had always depended on him.

He never doubted for a second that, no matter what went down between them, Chloe would never leave his

side.

But in the end, she left him with absolute determination.

When he lost her, his whole world shattered.

But she seemed to be living her best life.

Now, with just one sentence: He’s just my childhood friend. She had put an unbreakable wall between them, one Ian could never cross.

He was stuck, and he couldn’t bring himself to step back, but moving forward was impossible, too.

Ian thought, ‘All the pain I am feeling now? That is the price I am paying for betraying Chloe when it matters

most.’

Ian was feeling seriously down, the frustration eating at him. He glanced at Patrick and said, “Hey, wanna go get a drink?”

Patrick stayed put in the driver’s seat, not moving an inch.

He looked at Ian, and worry was written all over his face.

Patrick tried to comfort him. “Ian, I honestly have no clue what went down between you and Chloe, but if you two can’t make it work as a couple, maybe you should give someone else a shot.”

Ian shot back, “If you know in your heart she’s the one, could you really just let her go and find someone else that easily?”

Patrick tried to reason with him, “Come on, you’re not like me. I’ve always been true to Mia. But you? Don’t forget, you dated Andrea before.”

Just hearing Andrea’s name made Ian’s face darken instantly. “Don’t bring up that woman around me.”

Patrick raised an eyebrow. “Dude, she’s your ex. What’s with the look?”

Ian shot him a warning look. “Seriously, don’t mention her again.”

Patrick said, “Look, Andrea schemed to get close to you, became your savior, and then made off with 20 million from Edward behind your back. That was seriously messed up. But she was still someone you once loved.

“Are you really going to cut her off completely? Don’t you think you should at least think it over?”

Ian shot Patrick a sharp look. “The one I love is Chloe, not her.”

Patrick rolled his eyes, “Give me a break. Everyone knows exactly what you’re like with Chloe. Who are you trying to fool?”

Ian’s chest felt tight with frustration. He opened the car door and stepped out.

Early the next morning at Hamilton Group, Henry was waiting for Ian at the entrance to Ian’s private elevator. “Wait up, Mr. Hamilton,” he said as Ian approached.

Ian paused. “Mr. Quinn, is there something urgent this early?”

Henry glanced at Mitchell, who was standing next to Ian, and then forced himself to speak up. “Mr. Hamilton, I hope you can go easy on Ms. Sherman.”

Ian let out a cold snort. “Why should I go easy on her?”

Henry hunched over in front of Ian, his posture deferential. “Mr. Hamilton, if you go easy on Ms. Sherman this time, I swear she’ll never show up in front of you again. Any losses she caused your company. I’ll cover them myself.”

Ian kept his hands in his pockets, staring down at Henry with a cold, sharp look. “Mr. Quinn, you sure seem nervous about Ms. Sherman.

“You’ve helped her out of trouble more than once. So tell me. Does she steal those top-secret company files have anything to do with you?”

Henry was sweating bullets, kept waving his hands, trying to explain himself. “Seriously, Mr. Hamilton, you’ve got it all wrong. Ms. Sherman is just my friend’s niece. That’s all.”

Ian cut him off, clearly out of patience. “Good. As long as it’s not your mess.”

Henry watched Ian disappear into the elevator, then bolted out of Hamilton Group as his life depended on it.

After Ian got off the elevator, he called Mia.

About an hour later, at the Evergreen Residence, Violet was pacing at home, worried sick over Andrea. Just then, Henry came through the door.

Violet hurried over, asking anxiously, “So? Did Mr. Hamilton agree to drop the charges?”

Henry was clearly losing patience. “I’ve told you a million times. Ian is not someone to mess with. But your niece just had to go and stir things up with him.”

Violet couldn’t hide her disappointment as she watched Henry’s reaction. She flopped down on the couch, looking utterly defeated.

Henry warned Violet, “Last time I tried to help your niece, I lost sixty million and had to give up an entire plot
