Margaret set her bag down on Ian’s desk and leaned forward, bracing her hands on the edge.

She fixed lan with a serious look and demanded, “Mr. Hamilton, this afternoon at Velvet Beauty, a woman called Andrea claimed she was your ex.”

Ian, unfazed, said, “And?”

Margaret said, “I don’t even know your ex, but she kept insisting I’m your fiancée and that I lured her back to stir things up between you two and make you think badly of her.

“Then she slapped me right in front of everyone.”

Ian asked, “Have you two ever met before?”

Margaret said, “Your ex said she found wedding photos of us on your laptop. Mr. Hamilton, can you please explain what’s going on here?”

Ian, still cool as ever, said, “Funny. I don’t recall ever taking wedding photos with you, Miss Goodwin.”

Margaret took a deep breath and steadied herself. “That’s what your ex claims. Why don’t you have her come here and say it to my face?”

Ian stood up slowly.

He looked at Margaret. “Miss Goodwin, that woman tried to set me up. She conned 20 million out of my grandpa, stole a confidential file from the Hamilton Group while I was away, and I had her arrested twice.

“It was only because Mr. Quinn intervened that I let her go. Miss Goodwin, do you actually believe anything she says?”

Margaret felt a wave of regret washing over her.

She might not have interacted with Ian much, but she’d heard all about his legendary business skills. She’d let her emotions get the better of her just now.

She thought that she shouldn’t have rushed over to confront Ian just because a crazy woman slapped her and said a few provocative things.

Margaret apologized right away. “I’m sorry, Mr. Hamilton. I shouldn’t have bothered you before I even looked into things properly.”

Ian said, “Miss Goodwin, I don’t know when you might have crossed her, but it’s obvious she’s just using you to do her dirty work.”

Margaret clenched her fists in anger.

Ian’s face grew colder, his features hardening. “Miss Goodwin, I’m letting this go because of Mr. Goodwin, and I won’t hold it against you for barging into my office.”

After a brief pause, Ian warned, “Miss Goodwin, if it happens again, don’t expect me to show you any mercy.”

Margaret quickly softened her tone. “I’m sorry, Mr. Hamilton. I acted on impulse just now. Please don’t take it to heart.”

She thought, ‘I’m going to make that lunatic pay.

Margaret said timidly, “Mr. Hamilton, since this isn’t your concern, I won’t bother you any longer. I’ll be going

now.”

Margaret left Ian’s office as fast as she could.

Mitchell saw Ian calmly resume work and couldn’t help but sigh. He thought, ‘Mr. Hamilton really knows how to make others do the heavy lifting for him.

About ten minutes later, Margaret got into the car across from the Hamilton Group Building.

Lucille asked immediately, “What did Mr. Hamilton say?”

Margaret was fuming. “This has nothing to do with Mr. Hamilton. That woman somehow heard the rumor that I’m his fiancée, and she was trying to provoke me and drive a wedge between us.”

Lucille said, “Even if our families aren’t going to be joined by marriage, we still can’t afford to cross the Hamilton family. Who is that bitch? How dare she hit you?”

Margaret pulled Andrea’s file out of her bag and handed it to Lucille. “Mom, I don’t have time to waste on this ridiculous woman. You deal with her. Feel free to teach her a lesson.”

Lucille gave Andrea’s file a quick once-over and couldn’t help saying, “This is weird. I’ve never seen a resume this squeaky clean; it’s almost too perfect. Her background has been wiped clean for sure.”

Margaret snatched the file back and skimmed it herself, feeling the same way. She said, “Mom, looks like Andrea isn’t just some ordinary woman. She’s all yours.”

Lucille told the driver to start the car. She thought, ‘No matter who that bitch is, she’s gonna pay for what she did to my daughter.’

Henry was demanding that Renee hand over Andrea’s phone, but Renee flat-out refused.

The two of them were at each other’s throats.

Henry, red-faced with rage, pointed angrily at Renee. “You’re just like your mother. You’re completely unreasonable.”

Renee shot back, jabbing her finger right back at him. “You’re a jerk. Don’t mention my mom.”

Henry jabbed his finger at her. “Are you going to hand over that phone or not?”

Renee stared him down, not backing off for a second. “I’ve already got all the dirt from that bitch’s phone. You

“Even if I give you the phone, there’s no way you can protect that slut or the bastard she’s carrying.”

In a fit of rage, Henry slapped Renee hard across the face.

Renee whipped out Andrea’s phone and smashed it into pieces right in front of him.

Just then, Eleanor stormed in with her two younger brothers.

They kicked Henry to the floor and hauled him up, one on each side, dragging him right in front of Eleanor.

Eleanor’s heart twisted seeing the slap mark on her daughter’s face. She pointed right at Henry. “Renee might not be able to hit you, but I sure as hell can.”

Eleanor snatched up a book and went to town on Henry, beating the crap out of him with everything she had.
