Chloe caught lan’s cautious look, then averted her eyes.
If it hadn’t been for Ian, her family would still be stuck dealing with that couple.

Therefore, it was only natural for her parents to invite lan to stay for lunch, and she didn’t have to object.
Seeing Chloe nod, Ian stepped forward and opened the car door for her parents.
Once they got home, Chloe’s parents started bustling around in the kitchen.
Chloe slipped into the kitchen to help out, just so she wouldn’t have to be alone with Ian.
Carl pulled Ian into his room, wanting him to help solve some math problems.
Frank took out the ribs and salmon in the kitchen. “Ian and Chloe both like light flavors, so I’ll deal with the salmon first.”
Chloe sighed. “Dad, that salmon is supposed to be for Christmas Eve.”
Her parents had always liked Ian and treated him like he was part of the Irvine family.
That was one of the reasons she hadn’t completely cut ties with Ian after coming back.
Jill shot Chloe a look. “Ian hardly ever comes over, so we want to whip up a few more dishes for him. We’ll just grab another salmon for tomorrow.”
Jill handed the freshly cleaned chicken to Frank. “Ian loves the chicken I make. Get it chopped.”
Chloe watched her parents, busy yet cheerful, and quietly stepped back to the doorway.
She remembered how they had treated Ian like a son-in-law, caring for him from when he was young.
She thought, ‘If they knew they had given everything and ended up with someone so ungrateful, they’d be upset.’
When lan stepped out of Carl’s room, he caught sight of Chloe at the kitchen door.
The semi-open kitchen framed her quiet figure. Inside, her parents were busy cooking and chatting away.
Ian couldn’t help but stare, lost in thought. He had once been part of this peaceful life.
When Chloe turned around with a plate in her hands, lan stepped forward. “Need a hand with anything?”
Chloe set the plate down on the dining table and gave lan a teasing look. “You are used to having everything handed to you, aren’t you? Don’t bother. Just sit and wait for your food.”
Ian tagged along after Chloe, stopping at the kitchen doorway.
Jill said, “Ian, just stay there. It’s all smoky here. You don’t want to get your clothes dirty.”
Frank came out of the kitchen, bringing out a bottle of good wine he’d been saving for a special occasion.

lan felt his eyes sting and, using the excuse of going to the bathroom, quickly turned away.
Chloe glanced back at Ian, but didn’t notice anything unusual.
Ian leaned over the sink, looking at himself in the mirror.

He’d grown up in a home filled with his parents’ constant arguments, and the atmosphere was always tense. He’d often find excuses to stay with the Irvine family, or Chloe would just bring him along herself.
Every time he came by, Carl would be over the moon, and her parents would be just as happy as they were today.
Whenever he showed up, the Irvine family would whip up all his favorite dishes.
They’d dote on him, treating him just like he was their own kid, and he’d just taken it all for granted, never even realizing how lucky he was.
Now he understood and regretted it. He wanted so badly to fit in with them, but it was already too late.
Ian leaned on the sink with both hands, feeling a sharp pain in his heart.
“Ian, you done in there?” Carl called from outside.
Ian took a deep breath and forced himself to pull it together, doing his best to hide any trace of it from Chloe.
Carl enthusiastically pulled out the chair right next to Chloe, grinning. “Ian, sit here.”
Ian looked at Carl, dropping his gaze to hide the guilt flickering in his eyes.
Just like Chloe, Carl had always seen Ian as part of them since they were little. Whenever something came up, Carl would run to Ian first, even before telling his own sister.
He depended on Ian, trusted him, and practically worshipped him
However, Ian hadn’t just hurt Carl’s wrist in his previous life; he’d hurt his feelings, too.
A dull ache spread through Ian’s chest. He quietly sat down next to Chloe, masking his emotions, and took the cup Carl handed him, pulling himself together.
Every dish on the table was made just the way he liked it.
Jill reminded Chloe, “Hey, don’t just focus on your food. Chat with Ian.”
Chloe smiled at Ian and said, “You should try this. It’s good.”
Ian looked at Chloe in a daze for a second, then lowered his head and quietly ate what she recommended
to him.
“It’s delicious,” Ian said softly.
Frank laughed. “Ian, it’s been a while. It feels like you’ve become distant from us.”
Jill smiled at Ian. “Whenever you’re here, just make yourself at home.”
Chapter 329
Ian gave a quick nod.
He knew Frank wasn’t fond of drinking alone, so he stood up and said, “Mr. Irvine, do you mind if I join you for a drink?”
Seeing her dad so genuinely happy, Chloe didn’t want to ruin the moment for him.
Watching lan sit there, laughing and chatting with her family like he really belonged, Chloe pursed her lips.
This was the moment she had longed for. She’d always wished Ian could stop acting like a spoiled rich boy and treat her family like his own, but in the end, it never happened.
This time, Ian finally learned how to truly reciprocate her parents’ kindness. Too bad that there was no future for him and Chloe.
After lunch, Ian jumped in to help Jill with the dishes.
However, Chloe started shooing him away. “You’ve already spent half the day here. Go do your own thing. I’ll get to the dishes in a bit.”
Ian stood there holding the dishes, facing Chloe. “I’m free today.”
Jill suggested, “Why not play a few games of chess with Frank before you head out?”
Seeing Chloe’s face go cold, Ian quickly corrected himself. “No, thanks, Mrs. Irvine. I just remembered I have something to do.”
Afraid Ian might back out at the last minute, Chloe quickly said, “I’ll walk you out downstairs.”
