Chloe spent the holiday taking her family to church, hiking, shopping, and seeing relatives, never staying home a single day until the break was over.
On the first day back at work after Christmas, Chloe and her colleague ran into Eric in the hallway.
Chloe greeted him warmly, and Eric replied with his usual politeness.
Chloe breathed a sigh of relief. She thought, ‘After not seeing him for a few days, Eric finally seemed back to his normal self. He’s not acting weird anymore.
Eric watched as Chloe and her colleague walked away, then headed back to his office.
Eric was just about to step into the dressing room when a young female doctor knocked on the door and
came in.
“Dr. Hurst, is there something you need?” Eric asked.
Phoebe Hurst set the gift down on Eric’s desk. “Happy Christmas, Mr. Jordan. I brought you this coffee mug.”
Eric glanced at the gift. “Dr. Hurst, we’re just colleagues. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t give me gifts. My girlfriend would misunderstand if she saw this.”
Phoebe’s expression changed instantly when she heard Eric mention a girlfriend. “That can’t be true. When did you get a girlfriend? Why am I only hearing about this now?”
Eric corrected her. “To be precise, she’s my fiancée, so show some respect.”
Phoebe looked embarrassed, but she wasn’t ready to give up. “I don’t believe it. Mrs. Astrid Jordan told me you didn’t have a girlfriend. She promised she’d help me marry into the Jordan family.”
Eric’s face grew serious. “If my grandma made you that promise, then go talk to her. Don’t bother me at
work.”
Eric impatiently hit the intercom and told his assistant to show Phoebe out and to make sure she took the coffee mug with her.
Phoebe stopped Eric’s assistant at the door and demanded, “Since when does Mr. Jordan have a girlfriend? Who is she? Is she one of our doctors?”
The assistant looked helpless. “Sorry, Dr. Hurst. I wish I knew the answers myself.”
Phoebe stormed into the elevator, fuming.
Her father was one of the board members at the Westside General Hospital, and her family had been doctors for three generations.
Astrid liked her and even tried to set her up with Eric.
She’d had her eyes on Eric this whole time, and if he really had a girlfriend, there was no way she wouldn’t know.

Eric slipped on his white coat in his office and gave himself a quick once-over in the mirror, making sure he looked sharp.
He cleared his throat and turned to his assistant. “Tell Dr. Irvine to come to my office.”
Meanwhile, Ian sat at his desk in the office, distractedly staring at his screen.
Chloe was back at the hospital today, and from now on, she’d be working side by side with Eric every single day, constantly running into him.
However, he was totally helpless. There wasn’t a damn thing he could do.
All he could do was keep his feelings for her to himself and let his mind run wild with all kinds of thoughts.
Ian had never felt so helpless and useless in his entire life.
Mitchell knocked and walked in. “Mr. Hamilton, the investigation you requested is complete.”
Ian snapped back to reality. “Go ahead.”
Mitchell said, “Philip did take the case for Kelton Group in Marlovia. He’s already on a plane heading there as we speak.”
Ian drummed his knuckles lightly on the desk. After a brief pause, he told Mitchell, “Pick a few capable men and keep Philip’s family under constant surveillance.”
Mitchell had no idea why Ian was so fixated on a lawyer’s family, but he just followed orders without question.
After Mitchell left the office, Ian slowly got to his feet.
He had secretly investigated Philip in his previous life.
Philip had taken on a case for Kelton Group in Marlovia, and that pissed off a dangerous crowd.
They kidnapped his wife and child to make him drop the case.
However, even though Philip dropped the case, his wife still died a tragic death, and his young son suffered severe psychological trauma.
It was only after the boy met Chloe that he slowly started to get better.
He had seen all the ways Philip cared for Chloe in the past, and this time, he would do whatever it took to protect Philip’s wife and son and keep the family together.
Two days later, Chloe was heading home from work when her phone buzzed. It was Carl asking her to bring some food back home.
While picking up food for Carl, Chloe just happened to run into a woman walking by with a little boy, maybe three years old.

When Chloe heard the woman call him “Simon”, she couldn’t help but look over at him. With just one glance, she recognized him as Philip’s son.
Chloe looked at the young woman walking with Simon. She was tall, fashionable, graceful, and very pretty.
When Chloe heard Simon call her “Mom”, she was even more certain that this mother and son were indeed Philip’s wife and child.
Gloria Foster seemed to be on the phone with Philip, her smile radiant with warmth and tenderness.
Chloe looked away, paid for her food, and was about to hop into a taxi when she suddenly saw a bunch of shady-looking guys shove Gloria and Simon into a car.
All at once, Chloe remembered the way Gloria died last time.
Philip told her that around the age of three, Simon had been kidnapped along with his mother, witnessed her brutal death, and subsequently developed severe psychological trauma.
Simon was the same age as Andrea’s son. By the timeline, it had to be this very moment.
Chloe ditched her food and jumped into a taxi. “Follow that car.”
It was late at night, and Chloe arrived at a half-built complex on the edge of town.
The taxi driver pulled over at the entrance and refused to drive any closer, no matter what.
Chloe had no choice but to pay up and get out.
Chloe watched the car drive into the abandoned building. Gloria and Simon should be inside.
She still didn’t know exactly what was going on, so there was no way she could call the police just yet.
Chloe had no choice but to summon her courage and enter the abandoned building to investigate. It was pitch black inside, and she fumbled around in the dark for a while before she finally saw the car.
She could hear someone snoring from inside the car, but there wasn’t a soul in sight.
